For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final and places 9 through 16, the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, and “Down” to swimmers in the B final.

After a big day 2, the NYU women vaulted to the top of the team standings by 26 points over MIT. The Violets didn’t have as big of a day today, but with five individual finals appearances tonight (2/3), they are still projected to hold onto a narrow lead. The Engineers are projected to close the gap to just eight points (not including relay seeding), also with five finalists (4/1).

However, the team projected to surge the most is Kenyon. The Owls went 1-2-3 in prelims of the 100 breast and have two more individual A final appearances beyond that (5/0). The Owls and the Engineers are the two teams seeded to score the most points tonight, 122 and 100 respectively. Still, NYU is likely to keep pace after the 800 free relay where they are seeded first. Emory (1/4) is the only other team with five individual finalists tonight.

On the men’s side, Denison is projected to hang onto their lead. The Big Red have eight individual finalists tonight, though six of them will swim in consolation finals. Still, they have enough of a lead that no team is expected to close the gap. Emory (3/2) has the next highest number of qualifiers, and it’s a steep drop off from there. The interesting race might be for 3rd and 4th, as Kenyon, CMU, and NYU are all projected to be within four points of each other before the 800 free relay.

Denison and Emory also each have one diver in the A final of men’s 1-meter. Centre College has the most divers in finals (2/1).
