Carly Afanasewicz, a Pro Swim Series finalist, has announced her verbal commitment to swim for the University of Georgia beginning in the fall of 2027. She originally committed to North Carolina State University earlier this year.

Afanasewicz is heading into her senior year at Pearl River High School in New York. She currently trains year-round with Phoenix Aquatic Club, where she excels at all four strokes and IM. One of the top recruits in her class, she is the 3rd-fastest 200 backstroker and 400 IMer in the cohort and ranks among the top 10 in the 200 IM; she was named the #9 recruit in SwimSwam’s Way Too Early list of the top 20 girls swimmers in the high school class of 2027.
Since her previous commitment, Afanasewicz has dropped over a second in the 100 back and 200 back and around half a second in the 400 IM and 200 free. At the 2026 TYR Senior Mets Winter meet in February, Afanasewicz turned in a series of top performances. She won the 100 back (52.55), 200 back (1:53.40), 100 fly (53.83), 200 IM (1:59.47) and 400 IM (4:11.63) and placing 9th in the 100 free (50.64), setting best times in all but the 100 fly and 100 free. She also logged a personal best time in the 200 free (1:48.87) as the leadoff on the 800 free relay.
Afanasewicz recently competed at the 2026 Pro Swim Series (LCM) stop in Indianapolis, where she earned a second swim in two events. She placed 22nd in the 200 back (2:15.95) after setting a best time of 2:15.11 during prelims and finished 29th in the 100 back (1:03.55). She also contested the 50 fly (29.26 – SB) and 400 IM (5:00.96).

A Division I program, Georgia competes in the Southeastern Conference, with the Bulldogs placing 6th at this past season’s conference championships before sending five athletes to compete at the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship, where they finished 15th overall. Based on the results from the 2026 SEC Championships, Afanasewicz would have landed in the ‘A’ final in the 200 back and 400 IM, the ‘B’ final in the 100 back and the ‘C’ final in the 200 IM, setting her up to be a top contributor for the Bulldogs when she arrives on campus.
Currently set to join Afanasewicz in Georgia’s class of 2031 are Vivienne Zangaro, Lilliana Krstolic, Nikki Nixon and Jordyn Glassley, who should all make for strong training partners over their four years together.
