Four-time West Virginia high school state champion Owen Guthrie has announced his commitment to swim and study at West Virginia University beginning in the fall of 2026. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I’m excited to announce my commitment to West Virginia University to continue the pursuit of my academic and swimming career. It will be an honor to swim for and represent my home state. I want to thank all my coaches, family, teammates, and friends who got me here. Thank you to the WVU coaches for this amazing opportunity! 🔵 🟡 LET’S GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!
The future Mountaineer recently graduated from Bridgeport High School, where he competed for the school’s varsity swimming and diving team for his first three years. Guthrie currently trains year-round with Mountain State Storm and primarily specializes in the short freestyle events, butterfly, sprint breaststroke and 200 IM.
Guthrie’s sprint free personal bests were set at the 2025 West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) State Championships, where he won every event he contested, swimming 20.69 in the 50 free and 45.16 in the 100 free, and anchoring winning 200 and 400 free relays with splits of 20.64 and 44.88. A few weeks later at the club state championships, he won the 50 fly (22.42), 100 fly (48.83), 100 breast (57.43), 200 IM (1:52.79), and 200 free (1:40.38), and took second in the 200 fly (1:54.41), 50 free (21.12), and 100 free (45.82), setting personal bests across the board.
Top SCY Times:
- 50 Freestyle: 20.69
- 100 Freestyle: 45.16
- 200 Freestyle: 1:40.38
- 100 Butterfly: 48.83
- 200 Butterfly: 1:54.17
- 100 Breaststroke: 57.22
- 200 IM: 1:52.79
A Division I program, West Virginia competes in the Big 12 Conference, with the men’s team placing seventh out of seven teams at this past season’s conference meet. To earn a second swim, it took times of 20.13/44.57/1:36.75 in the 50/100/200 free, 47.62/1:49.39 in the 100/200 fly, 54.86 in the 100 breast, and 1:48.96 in the 200 IM, putting Guthrie outside the cutoffs.
On the team itself, Guthrie could be a key contributor to the Mountaineers’ sprint relays down the line, as his current PB in the 50 free would have ranked fifth on the team’s 2025-26 depth chart, with his 100 free and 100 fly both ranking seventh.
Guthrie joins Jin Rossi, Jay Hickman, Dan Ginaitis, Emre Zeytinoglu, Rylan Sepulveda, Roman Torres, Carter Bradley, Kenneth McGlothen, and Owen Eisenhofer in committing to West Virginia’s class of 2030.
