2025 U.S. Summer Championships

Friday Finals Heat Sheet

We are down to just one remaining session of the 2025 U.S. Summer Championships. In the eight events that had prelims this morning, there are eight scratches from tonight’s finals.

In the men’s 200 freestyle, Australia’s Matthew Galea and California Aquatics’ Thackston McMullan have opted out of the event. Galea touched 4th overall this morning at 1:49.85, while McMullan hit the wall 18th with a time of 1:54.71.

Galea is slated to take on the 1500 free in tonight instead, where he is ranked 2nd on the entry list. In his 200 absence, Swim Atlanta’s Sebastien Sergile (1:50.55) moves from lane four in the ‘B’ final to lane eight of the ‘A’ final. This also causes South Florida’s Juan Vallmitjana (1:52.41) to move from the ‘C’ final into the ‘B’ heat.

McMullan’s scratch has no impact on any of the heats, as he was one of five originally scheduled swimmers in the ‘C’ final and it will now only feature four athletes.

California Aquatics’ Evgenii Somov has declared his intention to forgo the men’s 100 breaststroke consolation final. He produced a time of 1:02.01 to sit 13th out of prelims, well off his 58.72 personal best from the Atlanta Classic last May, a time that would have won Olympic gold if replicated in Paris, where he settled for 13th in 1:00.00.

Somov’s scratch elevates Cavalier Aquatics’ Max Moore (1:02.88) into the ‘B’ final.

Hershey Aquatic Club’s Gavin Tran has opted out of the ‘C’ final, where he finished 25th this morning at 1:04.87. He was the lowest seeded swimmer out of prelims, and with his scratch there will only be seven swimmers in the ‘C’ final field.

Louisville’s Gregg Enoch has pulled out of the men’s 200 butterfly after notching the 13th-quickest time this morning. He touched the wall in 2:03.59, but his scratch will have no impact on any heats as there were only 14 competitors, so the ‘B’ final will now only include five swimmers.

In women’s 50 backstroke action, Ohio State’s Rachel Bockrath (29.63) and Phoenix Swim Club’s Carla Gonzalez (30.12) no longer appear in the ‘B’ final. They were ranked 14th and 16th out of the prelims, respectively. This moves Pittsburgh’s Mary Clarke (30.21) into the ‘B’ heat and eliminates the ‘C’ final entirely.

17th-seeded Jordan Tiffany, who recently announced his transfer to Arizona State, has decided not to pursue the men’s 50 back ‘C’ final. With his decision, only four swimmers will line up behind the blocks for that heat tonight.

Where was Evgenii Somov training last year when he did the 58.72? I don’t remember it reading California Aquatics in the results.
