Thursday Finals Heat Sheet

And just like that, we’re nearly three days through the 2025 U.S. Summer Championships. While many heavy hitters have gathered in Irvine, this morning featured only a few heats of each event. Despite the limited number of competitors, there were still eight scratches for Thursday’s finals session.

In the women’s 100 freestyle, 19-year-old Asia Kozan has withdrawn from the ‘C’ final, where she entered seeded 19th—the last swimmer in a heat that only included three swimmers. With her scratch, only two swimmers will compete in that heat. The Tritons Aquatic Club swimmer logged 1:00.39 this morning, just over four seconds shy of her August 2023 lifetime best of 56.17.

There were three scratches in the men’s 100 free, with one coming from the ‘A’ final and two from the ‘B’ heat. #7 Jack Dahlgren, who recently won gold in the 200 butterfly at the World University Games last month, has dropped the event, which allows Southern Methodist University’s Sage Sungail to rise up into the ‘A’ final after touching 9th during the preliminary heats.

Dahlgren notched a time of 49.64 this morning, which was just over half a second shy of his 49.00 best time from the 2023 Pan American Games. Sungail punched a time of 50.02 to undercut his personal record of 50.35 from March 2024.

Dahlgren’s scratch also allowed Alexandru-Richard Szilagyi (50.86) to elevate from ‘C’ final status to lane eight of the ‘B’ heat. He has been as quick as 50.36 in his career, and after his sub-51 effort this morning, could be within striking distance of that in a few hours’ time.

Sun Devil Aquatics’ Adam Chaney (#13, 50.41) and Ohio State’s Evan Fentress (#15, 50.50) both dropped the ‘B’ final. Hunter Cehelnik (51.72) and Thomas Nowakowski (55.96) move into the heat after originally advancing into the ‘C’ final. Chaney and Fentress were both off their best times this morning, but will be focusing on their other events tonight. Chaney cruised to the third seed for the 100 back final, while Fentress earned 11th seed status for the 50 fly consolation final.

Cehelnik was almost a full second shy of his PB 50.82 this morning, while Australian Nowakowski went for a 50 split (22.06) before cruising the rest of the race, notching 33.90 on the back end for a final result of 55.96. Nowakowski has a personal best of 49.77 from this meet back in 2023, but it remains to be seen if he’ll go for a 50 or 100 time in tonight’s final. His best 50 time rests at 21.78 from June 2024’s Australian Olympic Trials, and he was 8th in the 50 earlier this week in 22.67.

Two scratches were reported in the men’s 50 fly, with 12th-seeded Indiana Swim Club’s Brian Benzing (24.50) and 13th-seeded Rose Bowl Aquatics’ Logan Noguchi (24.76) opting out of competing. Their scratches allow both the aforementioned Cehelnik and Irvine Novaquatics’ David Schmitt (25.38) into the ‘B’ final. This also allows the ‘C’ final to be removed entirely since the field has shortened from 17 finalists to just 15.

Cehelnik just missed his best of 24.84 from last month this morning, while Schmitt has a career best of 25.16 from 2022.

Sun Devil Swimming’s Miriam Sheehan announced her intent to forgo the women’s 100 back ‘B’ final, where she was ranked 15th following prelims. She is set to focus solely on the 50 fly where she notched 27.05 to sit 4th into the ‘A’ final.

Her removal from the final permits Mission Viejo Nadadores’ Nathaloia Siqueira Almeida (1:06.34) to contest the ‘B’ final. With only 17 swimmers in the event, this eliminates the ‘C’ final entirely, meaning Siqueira Almeida does not to have to swim a solo ‘C’ final.

Siqueira Almeida seems to have a lot of room to drop, as the 27-year-old owns a lifetime-best 1:03.24 from February of last year. Look for some outside smoke in lane eight in tonight’s consolation heat.

The final scratch of the session comes from Evan Croley in the men’s 100 back. The 19-year-old was 16th at 58.51, 2.68 seconds off of his 55.83 lifetime best, opting to shift focus solely to freestyle where he was 14th out of prelims in 50.42. There were only 16 swimmers in the water for the event earlier today, so his scratch has no other implications.
