2025 BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPs

Thursday Night Finals Heat Sheet

The second full day of competino of the 2025 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships continues tonight in Federal Way. The Arizona State Sun Devils look to be cruising to their first Big 12 titles after qualifying the most swimmers for tonight’s A-final on both the men’s (11) and women’s (9) sides. Additionally, an ASU swimmer will be in lane 4 in five of tonight’s six individual swimming events, with Cincinnati’s Kyle Bumgardner the lone exception after leading the way in the 400 IM prelims.

The night will close out with timed finals of the 400 medley relay. Keep an eye on the Arizona State men, whose seed time of 3:01.18 is faster than the mee record (3:02.11), and could threaten the overall conference record of 2:59.22.

2nd place went to Cincinnati’s Joleigh Crye, who touched in 52.13. Crye is primarily a breaststroker; she swam both the 100 and 200 at last year’s NCAAs, but today she took nearly a second off of her personal best, finishing well under the NCAA ‘B’ cut.

Jeanne Dahmen of TCU was the only other woman under 53 tonight, and she also set a big personal best, coming into the day with a best of 53.45 before going 53.43 in prelims and 52.85 in tonight’s final.

Ilya Kharun rattled Joseph Schooling’s meet record as he went 44.13 tonight to easily take the win. Kharun’s been a bit faster this season, having gone 43.85 at the NC State Invite. That time puts #4 in the nation this season.

The Sun Devils took three of the top four spots, with all three of those men going 45.00 or faster.

Filip Senc-Samardzic took 2nd in 44.93; that’s his first time ever going under 45 seconds, with his previous best of 45.18 coming from last year’s Pac-12 championships. Teammate Tommy Palmer also hit a personal best with his 4th-place time of 45.00. Heading into today’s, Palmer’s previous best was a 45.59 from the Eddie Reese Showdown last month.

The only non-ASU swimmer in the top four was Arizona’s Haakon Naughton. He, too, hit a lifetime best, also cracking 45 for the first time with a 44.94 to touch just behind Senc-Samardzic.

  • 2024 NCAA Invite Time: 4:10.74

Top 8:

  3. Libby Michel (Cincinnati) – 4:13.75
  4. Lucy Warnick (BYU) – 4:15.21

  6. Landry Hadder (Houston) – 4:17.36
  7. Hana Edwards (ASU) – 4:17.65
  8. Ella Guilfoil (ASU) – 4:18.66

It’s always fun when one of the longer events comes down to a narrow finish. ASU’s Sonia Vaishnani was out first, touching ahead of teammate Charli Brown by 0.12s at 100 yard mark. Brown took over the lead on the first half of the backstroke leg, but Vaishnani stayed right with her, and then moved ahead on the second lap of fly. Brown outsplit Vaishnani on the freestyle leg, but didn’t have quite enough time to close the gap, and Vaishnani touched first, 4:10.28 to 4:10.33.

Cincinnati’s Libby Michel moved into third place early in the backstroke leg, and she held that position the rest of the way, touching in 4:13.75. She missed the school record by a scant 0.12s, but she still took nearly two seconds off her personal best today. BYU freshman Lucy Warnick was also under the NCAA ‘B’ cut, taking 4th in 4:15.21.

Arizona State freshman Michael Hochwalt set his third personal best of the season in this event en route to his first Big 12 title. Hochwalt, who we ranked as the #15 recruit in the class of 2025, came out of high school with a best time of 3:42.88, and set personal bests at the NC Invite (3:42.12) and the Eddie Reese Showdown (3:41.98) earlier this season before going 3:31.40 tonight.

But it wasn’t an easy victory; Hochwalt led for essentially the entire race, but he had to hold off a late surge from teammate Daniel Matheson. The Sun Devil senior ultimately just ran out of pool, as Matheson got the touch, 3:41.40 to 3:41.45.

Matheson finished 11th in this event at NCAAs last year, clocking a lifetime best of 3:39.70. Another Sun Devil, Cale Martter, took 3rd tonight in 3:42.29 after taking 13th at NCAAs last year.

It’s a little surprising to me that there are virtually no comments about this meet. I thought there would be some talk about ASU at least.
