Agnel Struck by Illness Ripping Through French Championships

Aidan Pongrace contributed to this report.

A nasty bug, of origins unknown, is ripping through the French National Championships and World Championship Trials this week in Rennes, France, with between at least 20 swimmers reported to be extremely sick.

That includes Yannick Agnel, who was vomiting during Saturday morning’s preliminary sessions. Agnel has already qualified for Worlds in the 100 free, but still has the 200 free semi-finals and finals to navigate. He was 6th in prelims in a 1:50; that’s a race in which he’s the defending Olympic champion.

He was 2nd in the 100 free in 48.62, just behind William Meynard in 48.52, to earn his first spot in Barcelona.

A full report on the meet will come at the conclusion of the finals session.
