When asked about his role on the national team, having been a prominent member since 2015, Ryan Murphy likened his situation to that of Matt Grevers and Nathan Adrian when Murphy himself was a rookie. Grevers and Adrian were both on the national team for over a decade and by the time Murphy was traveling with the USA, the pair were team captains on numerous occasions.
Love this guy! Ryan is a wonderful role model for younger swimmers. Smart, humble, hard working, and is undoubtedly one of the best backstrokers ever! What a pleasure it’s been watching him almost make the Olympic team at 15 and now leading Team USA. What a career! Go Murph!
Swimswam turned a corner from a swimming community to a social media website when it included down votes in the comment section, allowing lonely trolls to anonymously hate others and vent their pent up anger toward the world. IMO, a lack of up votes is enough; if the administration eliminated down votes it would go a long way toward fixing the negativity in the comment section and prevent amplification of hate speech!!!

Comparing a 17 year old to a 28 year old… haha. Daniel Diehl is going to be legit but cmon man. Murph is just saying he’s one of the older guys and hopes the younger guys like Daniel look up to him. He’s not saying anything about winning or losing here

did nathan adrian ever break an individual WR? I think murphy is definitely on par with those guys. Grevers might’ve been dominant domestically for like a year or two more, but if Murphy makes the next olympic team he’s just as good no doubt.
Nathan Adrian was a much more valuable asset to USA relays for 8+ years and churned out medals in absolutely loaded 50 and 100 fields
Yeah but didn’t Murphy is also one of the reason why the US team sets the world record on medley relay two years ago because his split is much more consistent and he is also valuable to the US relay just like Adrian was.
I’m pretty sure Ryan Murphy had the world record in the 100 backstroke, which, of course, meant he was the best swimmer in the event ever at one point in time. No one up to that point was faster. He’s also won Olympic individual golds in two events, as well as relay golds. There is nothing “weak” about his career. It’s rather amazing that he’s able to hang on and be among the elite for such a long time.

Not sure why anyone would feel the need to smack talk Murphy’s career. Maybe he hasn’t quite delivered on the mountain of expectations after 100 & 200bk Olympic gold at age 21, but he’s been remarkably consistent and is always right up there in the fight for gold – been on every 100 and 200bk World/Olympic podium since 2016 besides narrowly missing out 100bk in 2019.
Has had the WR in LC and nearly broke it in SC in 2022. Has led off medley relay gold at the Olympics twice. Just because Ceccon and Rylov have beaten him in recent years doesn’t mean he isn’t still one of the biggest Team USA stars.
This comment makes no sense. Murph had an individual world record, which means that he was the absolute best in the 100 back EVER. The weak field is irrelevant in that argument. Also 4 gold medals in 2 Olympics… I really don’t understand the hate in this comment section. He’s one of the older guys going into this Worlds and the younger swimmers should look up to him. He’s been in the limelight and has won.
