Sjöström Posts the World’s Fastest 50 Butterfly in Malmö

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top five male and female swimmers based on FINA points scores.

After breaking a national record in the 50 backstroke on the first day of the Swedish Grand Prix Sarah Sjöström returned to the water on Sunday and posted the world’s fastest time in the women’s 50 butterfly. Sjöström won the event in at time of 25.24 taking over the top spot in the world rankings from Jeanette Ottesen who put up a 25.81 in September.

Sjöström won the 100 freestyle with ease touching in a time of 54.27 followed by Ida Marko-Varga who finished in a time of 55.68. Her win in the 100 backstroke was not so easy. At the halfway mark she trailed Ida Lindborg by three one-hundredths of a second. She eventually passed Lindborg taking the event in a time of 1:01.41 followed by Lindborg who posted a 1:01.41.

Sophie Hansson took both the 50 and 200 breaststroke on Sunday to complete the sweep of the breaststroke events in Malmö. Hansson won the 50 in a time of 31.89 while recording a 2:32.51 in the 200. Erik Persson won the men’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:02.13.

After winning the men’s 100 freestyle on Saturday Christoffer Carlsen tied David Gamburg of Israel for the gold in the 50 freestyle with both men posting 23.28.
