For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Distance freestyler Sophia Karras has verbally committed to Notre Dame’s class of 2025. Karras trains with Long Island Aquatic Club and attends Herricks High School in Long Island.

I am thrilled and proud to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Notre Dame! A special thank you to my family, coaches, friends and teammates who have helped guide and inspire me throughout this exciting journey. #GodCountryNotreDame. GO IRISH!! ☘️☘️☘️

  • 1500m free – 16:39.40

Recently, Karras swam well at the 2019 NYSPHSAA Championships, where she placed third in the 500 free in a lifetime best 4:48.16. She was also 11th in the 200 free (1:51.23).

This past summer, Karras dominated the mile at the 2019 Speedo Junior National Championships, winning the title with a lifetime best and Olympic Trials cut of 16:39.40. She was also fourth in the 800 free (8:48.20), another lifetime best, and 12th in the 400 (4:20.71) just off of her 4:18.97 best from the 2019 Senior Metropolitan Champs in July.

Karras will join a distance group at ND which has been led by Lindsay Stone, a current junior. Stone, who attended Pittsford High School (the recent NYSPHSAA champions) and just had her 500 free state record broken, has career-bests of 4:42.85 and 16:06.42 with the Fighting Irish. At the 2019 ACC Championships, Karras’s best times would’ve placed her in the 500 free C-final and she’d have been 18th in the mile.

Notre Dame is reloading its distance roster in time for Stone’s departure: Karras joins distance freestylers Mary Cate Pruitt and Maggie Graves in their class of 2025.
