Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Jake Newmark from Garden City High School and the Long Island Express on Long Island in New York has verbally committed to the Wisconsin Badgers. He’ll migrate west in the fall of 2020. According to Wisconsin’s rosters, this is the first time the Badgers will have a New York native on the men’s team since Phil Davies graduated after the 2009-2010 season.
“I am proud to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Wisconsin. I’d like to thank Coach Sugiyama and all the other coaches at Wisconsin for this wonderful opportunity. I’d also like to than my family, friends and coaches who have always supported me. I’m so excited to be a Badger. #onwisconsin.”
Newmark was the 2019 New York Federation Champion in the 200 free and 500 free as a junior, swimming best times in each.
As head coach Yuri Suguiyama enters his 2nd season leading the Badgers (and 3rd by the time Newmark arrives), Wisconsin is really looking for depth across its lineup, and Newmark has the potential to fill a lot of gaps.
Best Times in Yards:
- 50 free – 20.91
- 100 free – 45.25
- 200 free – 1:38.15
- 500 free – 4:27.10
- 100 back – 49.77
- 200 back – 1:48.66
- 100 fly – 49.26
- 200 IM – 1:56.56
- 400 IM – 4:06.61
If distilled down to a specialty, Newmark’s would probably be backstroke or middle-distance freestyles; however, it seems very likely, given his versatility (he’s been a respectable 1:04 in-season in the 100 yard breaststroke) that his IM events will rise to the top in college. Wisconsin’s highest-ranked 200 IM’er in the Big Ten last season was freshman Caleb Aman, who was 24th-best in the conference with a 1:46.86. Newmark should also have a chance to earn a spot on the Badgers’ 800 free relay as a freshman as well.
