Originally published on December 10, 2022.

Katie Grimes set personal best times in the W 500 FR (08 Dec 2022), W 400 IM ( 09 Dec 2022), W 1650 FR (10 Dec 2022).

I don’t see an issue.

One PB a day helps keep the critics away.

Serious question, has anyone ever had a more grueling event lineup at a major meet than what Grimes just did? Surely no one can match the single day ridiculousness of her 1650/2back/2fly/400FR Saturday, right?

I can’t wait to watch her race at the NCAA level. Any predictions on where she will swim in college?

I feel like most people are thinking she’ll end up at Florida like Sims. She has clearly mentioned looking up to Ledecky and there’s no clear star female distance program in the NCAA right now, so Florida feels like the favorite given their LCM results so far. The training at Florida is also probably the closest match to Sandpipers as well.

Florida, if anywhere. It’s a school the Sandpipers gravitate towards because they’re also not afraid to still keep up the yardage.

I’d love to hear her goal times for the 2023 USA Swimming International Team Trials:

W 200 FR
W 400 FR
W 800 FR
W 1500 FR
W 400 IM (Katie Hoff’s record, perhaps?)

Maybe she should have been at the US Open last week swimming against equal competition.

Nah Winter Juniors was way more fun and arguably similar competition depending on the event.

Let her be a junior and have fun with her teammates. There will be plenty of opportunities in the future for her to go to the US Open.

Of the female swimmers who individually medaled for USA Swimming at the 2022 FINA World Aquatic Championships, four attended the 2022 U.S. Open:

Hayes, Leah
Ledecky, Katie
Smith, Regan
Weyant, Emma

Aside from the Sandpipers of Nevada, the notable MIA at the 2022 U.S. Open:

Bacon, Phoebe
Berkoff, Katherine
Brown, Erika
Curzan, Claire
Douglass, Kate
Flickinger, Hali
Huske, Torri
King, Lilly
Smith, Leah
Walsh, Alex
White, Rhyan

The U.S. Open has seemed to lose its luster.

Extremely talented children are still children. One of the biggest risk factors for talented children and adolescents is not having a peer group: it’s a risk factor for burning out or losing enjoyment for one’s sport; it’s a risk factor for engaging in developmentally inappropriate behavior; and it’s a major risk factor for vulnerability to abuse.
