15-Year-Old David Curtiss Posts 19.75 50 Free at Y Nationals

2018 YMCA SHORT COURSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Tri-Hampton YMCA’s David Curtiss won the men’s 50 free tonight at the 2018 YMCA Short Course National Championships, posting a personal best of 19.75. Curtiss, a 15 year old, was the only swimmer under 20 seconds, and shed .22 seconds off his previous best of 19.97. He was off Ryan Held‘s YMCA National Record of 19.52, but he did move up from 9th all-time for 15-16 year olds to 5th. He also moved up from 4th to 2nd all-time for 15 year olds. Ryan Hoffer is the only 15 year old to have gone faster, leading off a relay in 19.54 when he was 15.

The runner-up in the event was 15 year old Jack Alexy, who went a personal best of 20.11. That moves him up from outside the all-time top 100 for 15-16 (previous best 20.58) all the way up to a tie for 20th with Albert Gwo. It also moved him up to 9th in the all-time rankings for 15 year olds.

Why is David Curtiss listed with a 19.75 in one list but a 19.86 in the other?

Matt Brownstead, Jack Alexy, and David Curtis all swam that fast this year, and all live relatively close to each other.
