Siena Punctuates Senior Day With Decisive Win Over Stonehill

LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Siena Swimming and Diving Team put forth a dominant all-around team effort in topping visiting Stonehill 238.5 to 128.5, winning nine of 13 total events at the Siena Swim Center on Saturday to put a punctuation mark onto their Senior Day celebration.

The Saints (6-9) turned in winners from sophomore GayLynn Kirn (200-yard freestyle), freshman Leslie Dame (100-yard breaststroke), sophomore Hope Ivanovich (50-yard butterfly and 400-yard Individual medley), senior Shaylea Triller (50-yard free and 100-free), sophomore Mea Amedio (100-yard IM), freshman Gabrielle Rentosa (50-yard backstroke) and the 200-yard free relay team of junior Mya Reed, senior Kylie Carter, junior Kaci Owens and Kirn.

Kirn finished the 200 free in 1:55.76 to edge past teammate Natalie Blume (1:56.12).

Dame, a native of St. John’s, FL, clocked in 1:08.44 to top her next closest competitor by nearly one second in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Ivanovich, the resident of Trumbull, CT, advanced in two skins with times of 26.06, then 26.22, before winning the 50-yard butterfly in 26.34.

The 19-year-old had enough left in the tank to also win the women’s 400-yard IM by over four seconds in 4:43.46.

Triller was a two-event winner as well, earning the victory in the 50-yard free skins event with times of 24.55, 25.25 and finally 25.15 in the one-on-one face off with her teammate Amedio (25.31).

Triller, a native of Newburgh, NY, also took the 100-yard free in 52.96 to edge past her teammate Carter (54.10).

Amedio, the local product from Colonie, NY, was first in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:01.09.

Rentosa, the newcomer from Brewer, ME and graduate of John Bapste Memorial, swam the 50-yard backstroke skins in 28.07, then 28.41 before winning in 29.49.

Reed, Carter, Owens and Kirn won the 200-yard free relay by about a second and a half, swimming in 1:38.33.

The Saints improved to 4-0 against the Skyhawks with all meetings having taken place since Jan. 23, 2023.

Additionally, Alice Scalmani, Blume and Leana Padunina each recorded personal bests on the day. Scalmani swam the 100 back in 1:02.73, Blume finished the 100 fly in 1:00.66 and placed second while Padunina swam the 100 back in 27.64 in the first skin for the best time.

Siena returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 when the team visits Saint Peter’s in Jersey City, NJ at noon.

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (January 18, 2025) – Stonehill College competed in a dual meet with Siena College, earning six event wins, but the Saints took a 238.5-128.5 head-to-head decision in women’s swimming action at the Siena Swim Center this afternoon.

Stonehill’s 200-yard medley relay shined with a first-place finish to start the meet in 1:49.65. Freshman Maddie Gomez opened with a personal-best 27.68-second backstroke leg, before junior Taylor Belanger swam the breaststroke leg in 30.70 seconds and sophomore Grace Idowu finished the butterfly leg in 26.36-seconds before junior Kristy Barry completed the freestyle anchor leg in 24.91.

Freshman Elizabeth Weston shined in the backstroke events for Stonehill, starting with a first-place finish at 100 yards in a personal-best 59.66-seconds, while Gomez finished third in 1:00.44.

The 50-yard sprint events were competed as “skins” events with half the entries eliminated after a run. Weston later added a second-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke “skins” event with a final round time of 29.86 seconds. She was also second in the first round in a personal-best 28.02 seconds and semifinals in 28.48.

Senior Sharlotte Lundell won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.26, while postgrad Katie Keating placed third in 1:01.59 and junior Azia Koser was fourth in a season-best 1:02.16.

Belanger and fellow junior Jami Hepburn swept their way to first and second in the 50-yard breaststroke, respectively. Belanger took the head-to-head final with Hepburn in 31.34 seconds, with Hepburn finishing in 32.58. Belanger opened with a 30.88 split in the first round, with a mere 0.04 behind in second in a season-best 30.92 seconds. Belanger also won the semifinal heat in 31.24 seconds, with Hepburn second in 31.57.

Barry followed up a school-record performance in the 100-yard individual medley relay at Brandeis on Wednesday with a second-place finish in the event today in 1:09.90, while Gomez finished off a solid afternoon with a fourth-place finish in 1:03.08.

Barry also took second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:47.93. She finished the butterfly leg in 1:03.73, before swimming the backstroke leg in 1:13.14, finishing the breaststroke leg in 1:26.23 and the freestyle anchor leg in 1:07.72.

Freshman Lilith Peterson and Hepburn turned in strong performances in the 100-yard breaststroke and were separated by just a tenth of a second. Peterson finished second in 1:09.23, while Hepburn placed third in a season-best 1:09.23.

  • Freshman Chihiro Bringman led four Skyhawks in the 200-yard freestyle with a third-place finish in a season-best 2:03.50.
  • Idowu finished third in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.87 seconds to lead four Skyhawks in the event. Senior Julie Mastroianni placed sixth in 58.69.

  • Lundell reached the second round of the 50-yard butterfly, finishing fourth in the opening heat in 27.38 seconds and then tied for third in the semifinal heat in 27.37.
  • Idowu placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.31 seconds to lead four Skyhawk entries.

Stonehill returns to action next Saturday for its Senior Meet against Merrimack College at Massasoit Community College Poll at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks are gearing up for the 2025 Northeast Conference Championships at Spire Academy in Geneva, Ohio, February 19-22.
