Sarah Sjostrom Rips 52.99 To Take Over 100 Free World Rankings

2023 SWIM OPEN STOCKHOLM

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom treated the home crowd to a terrific swim in the women’s 100m freestyle to cap off a successful 2023 Swim Open Stockholm.

The 29-year-old superstar ripped a stellar time of 52.99 to scorch the field tonight, following up her also-impressive time of 23.92 in last night’s 50m free.

Sjostrom opened her 1free race in 25.69 and brought it home in 27.30 to beat out runners-up Signe Bro of Denmark, fellow Swede Michelle Coleman and American Catie DeLoof. Bro touched in 54.23 for silver while the remaining pair tied for bronze in 54.37.

In a career that has produced over 3 dozen 100m freestyle performances under the 53-second threshold, Sjostrom’s result checks in as her 36th-best time. She now wears the season’s world ranking crown, relieving Dutch swimmer Marrit Steenbergen who had been #1 with her time of 53.10 from Eindhoven earlier this month.

16-year-old Enili Jefimova of Estonia also got it done for gold tonight, capturing the 100m breaststroke top prize in a time of 1:06.36.

Splitting 31.11/35.25, Jefimova was able to hold off host country swimmer Sophie Hansson who settled for silver in 1:06.85. Finland’s Ida Hulkko also landed on the podium in 1:08.32.

Jefimova’s effort checks in as a new national record for the teenager. Look for a subsequent post on her performance.

Perkins was only 8:43 in the 800. Hopefully she can get up for the 200. Needs to be faster than Casey’s 1:59.11 to get an individual spot.

Lol sorry Sarah.

I hope they give us a finals article to comment on. Doesn’t even need to be a live recap, just post an article and the comments will write the recap for them.

26.63/26.89 for MOC. Slowly but surely taking over the list of fastest ever back-end splits.

MOC is built different. 26.6/26.8 savage…

She can run down anyone she wants at any given day.

At last year’s Comm Games, if she had 2 more meters she would’ve gotten Titmus in the 200 free.

when Summer swam her 1:53.9 at Canadian trials it made me curious as to how fast all the top performers first 100 were and pretty much everyone opens in a 55 mid (or faster if they’re sprinters), meanwhile MOC is consistently approx. a 56.7 whether it be back when her PB was a 1:56.2 at Olympic trials or now at a 1:54.0 from Comm Games, the only people who split it similarly to MOC are Tang and Yang

She and Ledecky (and Hosszu and Pelegrini before them) have honestly spoiled us for well over a decade.

I am getting so frustrated, Set the VPN to Sydney, and even change the time zone for my computer to match, but I get stuck in the verification “Email verification link or code has expired” in 5 seconds?

I do not seem to have any luck with this right now (I did try multiple computers and tables, android, Windows, and Apple, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari).

I’m not even using a VPN. I’m in Australia. It’s the website itself that is on the Fritz, not a problem with VPN or anything. Hopefully will be fixed by tonight

VPN is working fine for me here in cold wet Utrecht.

M100BRS – remains dire

W200IM: McKeown totally cruised 2nd half of her heats. Forrester looked best of the rest. McKeown will definitely be under QT tonight. Better than 50% chance with Forrester

M400FR: Winnington in snooze mode. Short went harder. Neill looked OK. Mackenzie Horton was …..Mackenzie Horton

M50FLY: McEvoy v Chalmers

W50BRS: Minus Hodges, there’s no one of real international consequence

OMG she’s never won gold in the 100 free at worlds? I just checked Wikipedia because I didn’t believe you but you’re right. That’s like totally unbelievable!

Yup, it has been elusive to her because 100 free has often been scheduled in after the 100 fly and different relays, even individual 200 free so she’s been going up against fresher girls and putting her focus a bit more towards the fly aswell in general. But now that her focus is different it wouldn’t be surprising to see her finally win it. But the 50s are a safer bet at this stage of her career.

Because of Sweden shallow talent, Sjostrom often had to swim relay prelims. That’s how she was so spent in Rio and didn’t even qualify for 50 final.

Yes. Being so versatile and, despite being so good in this event, this NOT being her no1 event; has probably cost her a world title that on merit should have been hers at least once.

There is also the reality that she has also been a contemporary of both Campbells, Kromowidjojo, Manuel & McKeon to name a few. Another cost factor has been the lack of depth in SWE ranks and whilst SWE has been able to field competitive 4X100 & 4XMEDs for much of her career; they have often had to use her in relay prelims.

Having said that; whilst most of us will want to see one of “their own” win; few if any would be truly unhappy… Read more »

She has never won a global 100 free in either distance. 6S/2B, to be blunt last year was likely her last chance, I’m not sure it will ever be as high as a 52.7 again.

I think she will do a few more sub 52.5’s but not sure about that 100 Free Gold at Worlds/Olympics (I hope I am 100% wrong)!

Curzan’s problem is that she’s medal worthy or close to medals in a bunch of events but not gold level for any of them at present. Swimming a 24.1 at 16 suggests she should be able to go 23 and contend for gold, and that seems like her best path to individual gold IMO.

Meehan has her doing the 200 back scy which may get a medal in the 100lcm. If she wants to chase the 50 she needs to leave Palo alto

I know there’s a lot to be said about a Stanford education, but if Curzan went to virgina it’s game over for the rest of the world😬
