Michael Andrew: “I feel like my energy systems kinda suited right now for 100-150 meters”

2025 TYR Pro Swim Series — Westmont

Video captured by Barry Revzin.

We saw Michael Andrew in action at the Westmont Pro Swim, racing 50s of stroke up to the 200 IM, where he placed 3rd. After verbally re-committing to the 200 IM earlier in the meet and showing that his finishing speed is in a good place, the Olympic champion said that his current energy system isn’t quite where he’d want it to be to swim an ideal 200 IM.

I mean..we’ve all seen his 150IM undisputed WR
Good for him to have that kind of clarity at this point of the Olympic cycle

His 200 IM at Trials semifinals was pretty spectacular. 23.90, 53.09 (29.19), 1:25.30 (32.21), 1:55.26 (29.96). Lochte’s 150m world record split is 1:26.51 (closed in 27.49). Marchand in Paris was 1:25.91 (closed in 28.15).

I’ve said this before, but my dream is for Michael Andrew to go a 1:54 low… while still being slower than 30 on the freestyle leg. I think people’s heads might actually explode.

mentally, physically, emotionally.
as well as shape wise in the past, present, and future (most likely), never a meter longer.
please, no offense. ma you are naturally talent-gifted athlete. That talent carried you through most of your career…+ FINA’s stroke 50s.
Hope you did not miss on the talent-to-pure-work merger…wish you healthy and successful cycle(s) for 2028.

Hmmm idk, 2:01 is a very solid in season time, especially for a 50s of stroke specialist. His free split was even close to his best.

And things swinging in MA’s favor in season is a good sign. Anything can happen in season. Michael Phelps went a 1:55 in the 2 free at a grand prix once.
