Iona Collects Two Wins in Sweep Over LIU

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The first-ever meeting between Long Island University and Iona University swimming and diving teams turned out to be very competitive where every one of the 28 races was highly contested, with the Gaels coming away with a pair of wins.

The Iona women took a 144-118 win, with the Iona men posting a 150-130 victory. The win raises the Iona women’s season mark to 4-1 and the men go to 2-2, with a road trip to Providence next Saturday on the slate.

MEET SUMMARY

The meet started off with the teams trading wins in the 200-Medley Relay with the Iona quartet of Victoria Novinsky, Julia MoserAshley Benkert and Megan Josephs winning by two seconds at 1:47.85. The LIU men won on a disqualification, but Iona picked up 2-3 points.

Pacing the Iona women with a pair of wins was Isabella Nicholson who touched first in the 100 and 200-Free at 53.27 and 1:55.09, respectively.  Other winners included benkert in the 100-Butterfly (57.67); Novinsky in the 200-IM at 2:09.51; Katherine Sarnes in the 1000-Free (10:47.64); and, Brennyn Veit in the 200-Breast (2:28.72).

The men were led by Michael Faughnan and Daniel Hadary with three wins each. Faughnan took the 100, 200 and 500-Freestyle races with respective times of 46.42, 1:39.72 and 4:42.13. Hadary claimed the top spot in the 100-Back, 200-Back and 200-Individual Medley at 53.27, 1:56.73 and 1:58.14, respectively.

Other winners on the men’s side included Dylan Riccio, who took uncontested wins in the 1 and 3-Meter Springboard. David Son came from behind to win the 200-Butterfly with a season best effort of 1:55.61 and Freshmen Michael Woyksnar picked up his first collegiate win in the 1000-Freestyle at 9:55.45.

COACHES’ COMMENTS

“The key today was scoring up and down our line-up” said, Nick Cavataro. “We had 18 different women score and 16 different men. That is a great recipe for success.”

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The LIU women’s swimming team competed in its second meet of the year at Iona on Friday night.

Maaike Broersma, the reigning NEC Swimmer of the Week, finished first in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with a time of 56.69. Aidan Condit finished third, her highest mark in two meets.

Junior Venna Andersen placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke after placing third in the 50-yard freestyle at Rutgers.

Other notable finishes included first in the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle by Ella Johnson and second in the 500 free from Femke Backx.

The Sharks return home tomorrow vs. Saint Peter’s at 11 a.m.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The LIU men’s swimming team began its 2022-23 season on Friday night at Iona.

The Sharks fell to the Gaels by a team score of 150-130 but had several impressive finishes throughout the evening.

Stephen Taylor claimed the fastest time in the 100 and 200 Yard Breaststroke.

Another first-place finish came in the 50 Yard Freestyle when Alejandro Pascual Del Cid had a final time of 21:50, followed by his teammate, Emilio Garcia.

The medley relay team of Benny Karlsson, Taylor, Lovro Dodik and Pascual Del Cid finished first with a time of 1:35.61.

Additionally, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Pascual Del Cid, Daniel Samoulich, Drew Ladner and Garcia took first.

Dani Chocano Fernandez and Lincoln Greseth finished second and third, respectively, in the 1000 Yard Freestyle.

Ethan Law closed out the evening with a 51:15 time in the 100 Yard Butterfly, finishing first by over a second.

In a quick turnaround, the men’s swimming team hosts Saint Francis U. at home at 11 a.m.
