DAVIDSON — Wildcat swimmers and divers finished the home portion of the schedule with wins over VMI Saturday afternoon in Cannon Pool.
The Wildcat women posted a 183-51 victory, while the Davidson men won 153-84.
Prior to the meet, the Wildcats honored the 10 members of the class of 2023: Thomas Broderick, Seth Carden, Abby Francis, Marissa Lassell, Lila McGrath, Selena Nishihata, Kate Pottle, Maurilio Saddoud, Drew Sheldon and Shelby Stanley.
“We had fun celebrating the seniors throughout today’s meet,” said coach John Young. “On the women’s side, the leadership of the 2023s hit in almost every event. Lila, Abby, Shelby and Marissa kicked us off with a win in the medley relay. Kate won decisively in the 1,000 and the 500. Abby touched first in the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Shelby won the 200 IM. Marissa and Lila went 1-2 in the 100 back. Kate, Selena, Lila and Marissa finished the day with the fastest time in the 200 free relay.
“We don’t have as many seniors on the men’s side, but they still made an impact,” said Young. “Maurilio held off the field, anchoring our 200 medley relay. Thomas touched first in the 200 IM, with an especially impressive fastest last leg … but his start was a little too fast. We even got Drew over to the blocks and Seth out of retirement for a spirited 200 free relay on the men’s side.
“After a tumultuous couple years, I’m grateful for the class of 2023’s leadership as we’ve returned to normal operations. And I’m optimistic that the last competitive chapter with their teammates will be as enjoyable as today was.”
Francis and Pottle won two events each to lead the Davidson women, while Dylan Felt and James Gourlay won twice for the men.
Francis was out front in the 100 free (53.36) and 100 breast (1:06.50), while Pottle swam first in the 500 (5:09.33) and 1,000 (10:28.88) frees. Other wins came from Stanley (200 IM, 2:07.87), Lassell (100 back, 1:01.11), Emma Murtaugh (200 free, 1:57.82), Cynthia Huang (100 fly, 59.27) and Addy Donaldson (50 free, 24.90).
McGrath, Franis, Stanley and Lassell won the 200 medley relay in 1:48.84, while Tess Hamilton (1M, 228.40) and Annica Valmassei (3M, 268.50) split the diving wins.
For the men, Felt won the 100 free in 46.43 and the 500 in 4:36.92, while Gourlay swept diving with scores of 302.30 and 294.90 in the 1M and 3M, respectively.
Cael McLaren (200 IM, 1:58.59), Ben McClain (200 free, 1:40.98), Ian Brann (100 back, 52.15) and Jackson McDonald (1,000 free, 10:00.37) also captured wins. Jeremy Kemp, Andrew Schou, Miles Charles and Saddoud swam first in the 200 medley relay (1:33.48).
Additionally, the Wildcats had the top times in the 200 free relay exhibitions. The women’s quartet of Pottle, Nishihata, McGrath and Lassell posted a 1:42.01, while McClain, Charles, Kemp and Guil Ware combined for the fastest men’s time (1:25.97).

Davidson’s divers will compete at the Virginia Tech Invitational Feb. 4-5, while the swimmers will next compete at the Atlantic 10 Championships Feb. 15-18.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams performed well Saturday at Davidson College at the Charles A. Cannon Pool.
“I’m very impressed with our swims on the road this afternoon after strong racing on Friday,” said head coach Scott Thacker. “We are really happy with where we are and are looking forward to our final preparation for the conference championship meet in a few weeks.”
Swimming Highlights:
*Carter Wasser, Anne Bowles, Rachel Bearz, and Anna Grace Adams placed second in the 200 medley relay
*Chino Vera, Chase Lane, Malik Nelson and Jack Sheehan placed third in the 200 medley relay
*Conner Jorgensen finished third in the 1000 free
*Nelson placed first in the 50 free
*Ethan Griffith finished second in the 200 IM, and in his next event placed first in the 100 fly
*Jack Sheehan placed first in the 100 breaststroke, and Tommy Lees finished 3rd;
Sheehan also finished second in the 100 free
*Wasser finished third in the 100 back
Diving Roundup:
*Bridger Thurston placed 3rd on both the 1M and 3M board
*London Yerasimides took 4th on both boards, while Ella Davenport was 5th on both boards and set a PR in the 3m.
Davidson won both the men’s (153-84) and women’s (183-51) team scoring.
