The US roster is not being sponsored by USA Swimming this year. Instead, swimmers have to pay the expenses out of pocket. Some swimmers set up individual GoFundMe’s to help offset expenses.
The total roster is made up of 17 men and 20 women. Instead of the roster being finalized at a selection meet, such as US Trials at the end of June, the roster was instead picked by expressing interest. There were no time standards or requirements to compete.
All five of the swimmers are some of the oldest swimmers on the roster. On the men’s side, Dahlgren just finished up his fifth year at Missouri, Daigle just finished up his fifth year at Michigan, and Hoagland just finished up his undergrad career at Notre Dame and will head to SMU this fall. For the women, Dickinson just finished up her fifth year at Georgia and Carlton just finished up her undergraduate career at UNC-Asheville.
Unlike typical WUG meets, this year’s meet allows for college graduates from 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 will be able to compete, along with currently enrolled students. In addition, some incoming freshmen will be representing the US.
The opening ceremony for the Games that will take place in Chengdu, China will take place July 28th. Swimming competition begins August 1st. The US squad arrived in Chengdu on July 26th.
