ST. PAUL, MINN. – It was yet another impressive Saturday for the University of St. Thomas swim and dive team. The Tommies hosted the St. Cloud State University Huskies at the Anderson Pool, their final tune up for the St. Thomas Invite in two weeks. The teams ultimately split, with the women upending St. Cloud State 189-111 and the men falling by a final score of 187-111.

MEN’S RESULTS: ST. THOMAS (111) vs. ST. CLOUD STATE (187)
The men won three individual races Saturday afternoon and saw several individuals earn top-3 finishes against the Huskies. Senior Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha West) kicked things off with an individual win in the 1000, clocking a time of 9:41.02 to win the race by nearly three full seconds. Teammate Tucker Holmes (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall) continued his strong collegiate start with a second-place finish in the same race thanks to a time of 9:44.04.

St. Thomas claimed titles in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, but by two different swimmers. Sophomore Jensen Richard (Rochester, Minn. / Century) won the 100 race thanks to a time of 56.61 before going on to finish third in the 200 with a time of 2:08.14. Teammate Sam Sacor (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) won the 200 after finishing fourth in the 100 thanks to a time of 2:03.07, and Sean Bannon (Rochester, Minn.) earned top-4 finishes in both races, claiming third in the 100 and fourth in the 200 respectively.

The Tommies also earned top-3 finishes in individual races from Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings), as the junior continued to excel in the backstroke. Jensen swam the second fastest time in the 100 backstroke, coming in second with a time of 49.54. Lucas Becker (Carver, Minn. / Chanhassen) just missed the 50 second mark, finishing third with a time of 51.89 in the race.

Jensen also earned a second place finish in the 200 backstroke, clocking a time of 1:51.91. Holmes finished third in the same race with a time of 1:53.22 and Becker fifth with a time of 1:55.76,

Austin Kantor (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) and Julius Krumenacher (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha North) represented St. Thomas in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, with Kantor finishing second in both events. The sophomore earned a score of 252.30 on the 1-meter board to finish second, while Krumenacher finished third with a score of 239.50. The duo finished second and fourth in the 3-meter competition with scores of 236.30 and 200.70 respectively.

WOMEN’S RESULTS: ST. THOMAS (189) vs. St. Cloud State (111)
St. Thomas was nothing short of dominant in its win over the Huskies Saturday afternoon, and it was kicked off by an impressive performance by the 200 medley relay team. The group of Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation), Amber Hess (Kohler, Wis. / Kohler) Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis. / Jefferson-Cambridge) and Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) swam away with a victory thanks to their time of 1:45.70. That set the tone for the remainder of the meet, as the Tommies won 13 events in Saturday’s victory.

Several St. Thomas student-athletes won two events, including Hattie Opdahl (Lindstrom, Minn. / Chisago Lakes), who continued to dominate on the diving boards. The sophomore swept the 1 and 3-meter competitions, opening her day with a win in the 1-meter competition thanks to a six-dive score of 253.80. She would go on to win the 3-meter competition thanks to a score of 231.05.

Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) was another two-event winner in the pool for the Tommies, winning both the 200 and 500 freestyle races. The sophomore won the shorter of the two with a time of 1:52.98 before claiming the top spot in the 500 with a time of 5:03.13. Tessa Jones won both the 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM with times of 2:22.85 and 2:10.29 respectively.

After helping the 200 medley relay team win earlier in the night, Davis and Forsberg claimed victories in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Davis won the 100 back with a time of 56.47, just beating out Fischer’s time of 58.86, while Forsberg won the 100 free with a time of 52.40. Kathryn Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Visitation), Jin-Jae Robinson (Galena, Ohio / Olentangy Berlin) and Grace Hehr (Mason City, Iowa / Newman Catholic) went 1-2-3 in the 200 backstroke with times of 2:05.28, 2:08.09 and 2:089.71 respectively.

Madison Parkin (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:10.22, continuing the trend of St. Thomas dominance throughout Saturday before Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) added another victory for the Tommies. The first year continued to dominate the 50 freestyle, beating out teammates Maddie Francois (Sartell, Minn. / Sartell) and Forsberg with a winning time of 23.85.

In addition to winning the first race of the morning, St. Thomas won the final race of the meet, claiming the top spot in the 400 freestyle relay. The Tommies “A” team of Forsberg, Undem, Fischer and Mary Selden (Davenport, Iowa / Davenport Central) used four strong swims to overtake the top team from St. Cloud State, just beating out their opponents at the wall to win the race with a time of 3:31.26.

UP NEXT
St. Thomas will be back in action for its annual invite, which will return to the Anderson Pool in two weeks. The St. Thomas Invite will be hosted in St. Paul, Minnesota from November 21-23, featuring several teams from the Midwest and surrounding area. Morning sessions are set to begin at 10:00 a.m., with evening sessions starting at 5:30 p.m.

  • Freshman Hallie Drossel picked up the win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.55
  • Senior Ruthie Lucht had an impressive showing in the distance events, earning first place in the 1000 freestyle (10:28.82) and second in the 500 freestyle (5:09.78)
  • Senior Anna Reschko took the win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.31
  • Sophomore Lance Godard picked up a school record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.88, which also earned him first place in the event. He also got the win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.77
  • Senior Raf Hendriks swept the backstroke events, earning wins in the 100 backstroke (48.33) and the 200 backstroke (1:45.83)
  • Sophomore diver Jimmy Nord got the win in both 1-meter and 3-meter
  • Sophomore sprinter Reid Tigges earned wins in both the 50 freestyle (20.58) and the 100 freestyle (46.22)

UP NEXT

The Huskies will be back in action next weekend, as they travel to Eau Claire, WI to face off against UW-Eau Claire. The divers will compete on Thursday, November 14 and the swimmers will compete on Friday, November 15.  The men’s team is hoping to continue their undefeated season, while the Women’s team is hoping to pick up their first win of the season.
