2022 SEC Championships: Day 2 Ups/Mids/Downs

2022 SEC SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, “Mid” to swimmers in the B final and “Down” to swimmers in the C final.

Before getting into the prelim numbers, here’s a look at how the team scores currently stand after Tuesday night’s diving and relay events:

The Florida men came out swinging on Wednesday morning at SECs, looking to distance themselves from the pack early as they vie for a 10th consecutive conference championship title.

Two-time defending champ Kieran Smith is also there for Florida, while Georgia put two up with reigning NCAA champion Jake Magahey and freshman Matt Sates.

The Gators followed by putting three up in the 50 free to lead the way with eight ‘A’ finalists, going 8/4/4/ overall.

The Bulldogs went 5/1/2, with Luca Urlando and Zach Hils making the 200 IM ‘A’ final and Dillon Downing advancing into the 50 free.

The Auburn men were next up at 3/4/2, with Alabama and Texas A&M the only others to put two men into ‘A’ finals.

On the women’s side, Tennessee had a similar showing to the Florida men, going 8/4/1 with three Vols advancing to ‘A’ finals in both the 500 free and 200 IM.

Tennessee had Julia Mrozinski and Kristen Stege step up with a pair of sub-4:40 500s to lead the prelims, while sophomore Aly Breslin ht a season-best to advance in sixth.

A pair of Vol freshmen in Ellen Walshe and Sara Stotler had strong 200 IM showings to qualify 1-4, with senior Alexis Yager also in at #6.

Alabama followed by going 5/3/1, while Georgia put four up and the reigning SEC champions from Kentucky went 2/3/3.
