A major player originally scheduled to compete at this weekend’s State Teams Age Short Course Championships at the Australian Institution of Sport in Canberra will now have to sit out unexpectedly.
Sources tell SwimSwam that on-fire freestyler Kyle Chalmers from South Australia has been taken ill and, in the interest of keeping the remainder of his team healthy, didn’t even board the plane to fly to Canberra.
Last year Chalmers was a key asset on the South Australian relays, where he threw down freestyle splits of 49.10 and 50.05 in the 400m freestyle and 400m medley relays, respectively. Most recently, 17 year-old Chalmers competed at the 2015 FINA World Championships, where he registered a 47.92 freestyle split in heats of the men’s 400m freestyle relay, while also clocking a 47.86 in heats of the 400m medley relay.
Chalmers was slated to swim the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke events in Canberra this weekend.
The Queensland Team is entering this weekend’s three-day competition looking to defend its title for the 7th straight time.
