14-year-old Sam Dailley is becoming a huge name in British age group swimming. This weekend, at ASA Winter National Championships in Sheffield, the young swimmer took down unofficial age group records in not one, but all three short course butterfly events.
Editor’s note: In short course, Britain doesn’t have official age group records, just junior and senior records; however, they do keep rankings, and Dailey’s “unofficial” records are based on those rankings.
He posted 25.47 in the 50m fly (33rd place), 55.72 in the 100m fly (33rd place), and 2:04.02 in the 200m fly (31st place). Check out his splits below:
- 100 fly- 26.04, 29.68
- 200 fly- 27.34, 31.75, 32.06, 32.87
This summer, Dailley dominated British Summer Championships, grabbing five golds, two silvers, and a bronze. This is not his first age group record. As a thirteen-year-old last year, he took the records in the 50 and 100 fly at British Gas Age Group Championships in 26.80 and 58.08, respectively.
Dailley swims for Plymouth Leander under head coach Jon Rudd. The team put up a ton of fast performances at the meet, including two national records from sprinting machine Ben Proud.

Hi Hannah. Just as a point of order and as Sam’s coach, there actually aren’t any 14 years records to break in a short course pool, only British/English Junior records, which are 15 years and under – and Sam didn’t break these. I suspect that you’re referring to the ‘All-Time British Rankings’ which aren’t official records, but a list of performances over time. Hope that helps!
