The Purdue men have picked up a verbal commitment from Gabriel Gomez, a sprint freestyler and butterflier from the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida.
Last season, Gomez helped the Bolles boys extend their streak of wins at the FHSAA 1A state meet, posting top 8 performances in both the 50 (21.15) and 100 (46.61) freestyles. In addition, he was a 1A district champion in the 50 freestyle.
Outside of the sprint freestyles, Gomez has also showcased his butterfly talents. At 2015 Winter Juniors, he clocked a personal best 50.17 in a time trial.
Gomez’s Top Times:
Event | Best time |
50 free | 21.05 |
100 free | 46.61 |
100 fly | 50.17 |
When he arrives at Purdue, Gomez will train alongside a sprint free group that includes Nate Thomas, Edward Zawatski, and James Boone. Thomas scored in the 50 free at last season’s Big Ten Championships.
Gomez’s arrival will also help Purdue fill some holes in their sprint group, as they’ll be graduating Austin Flager, Filip Bujoczek, and Joshua Ehrman. Bujoczek was a top 8 finisher in the 100 free at Big Tens last season, while Flager scored in the top 8 of the 100 fly and the B-final of both the 50 and 100 frees.
Good pick-up for the Boilers.
