In Briefs: Lochte, Clary, Amongst Several Scratches on Day 1 at ConocoPhillipsNationals

As one of our readers astutely pointed out in the wee hours of this morning, there have already been several scratches in the early morning of the 2011 USA Swimming National Championships. Based on the start lists that are listed on the live results (an absence on which generally implies a scratch), we won’t see the following World Championships swimmers in action on day 1:

Tyler Clary (400 IM)
Ryan Lochte (400 IM)
Peter Vanderkaay (400 free – still entered in 400 IM)
Ariana Kukors (2oo IM)
Mark Gangloff (100 breast)
Katie Hoff (400 free – still entered in 200 IM)
Kate Ziegler (400 free)

Some of those races, especially the guys, are not a big surprise. Especially for swimmers who probably don’t intend to swim at Pan Ams even if they qualify, there’s no use in swimming a tough event like a 400 IM a week after a big taper meet. I’d expect most of these swimmers to still pop up at some point later in the competition.

We will still see other WC team members in action on the first day, however, including:

Jasmine Tosky/Morgan Scroggy/Teresa Crippen/Missy Franklin/Katie Hoff (200 IM)
Eric Shanteau/Mike Alexandrov (100 breaststroke)
Allison Schmitt/Elizabeth Beisel/Chloe Sutton (400 free – don’t be surprised if she goes faster here than she did at World’s)
Dana Vollmer/Christine Magnuson/Dagny Knutson/Kathleen Hersey/Jasmine Tosky (100 fly)
Peter Vanderkaay (400 IM)

The prelims session will begin at 9AM west cost time (noon eastern), with finals to start at 6 PM (9 Eastern).

Full, live results for the meet are available here.

The 400 IM has been kind of a fun, no pressure event for PVK since he started training in Gainesville, and he’s been posting personal bests all summer in it, so maybe he just wants to see what he can do with some rest and surprise himself.

Beisel and Knutson in the 400 free are going to be spectacular. Now that Dagny has a stable training situation and is doing exactly the kind of work she should have been all along, she’s posting PBs again, and dropped the 200 IM and 100 fly prelims to focus on this event. Beisel has been posting PBs in the 200 and 400 this summer by large margins even when her IMs were way… Read more »

Dont think I have ever seen Nat’s this crowded. Looks like they are running two pools for prelims and the deep pool for finals. Anyone know if they are going fastest to slowest?

Beisel is going to be good in that 400 Free. Also, Missy Franklin is still entered in the 200 IM on Day 1, is she not?

Interesting that PVK is still listed as swimming in the 400IM but not in the 400free.
