Illinois Fighting Illini Roll To Senior Day Win Over In-State Rival EIU

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois swim and dive team emerged victorious on senior day over Eastern Illinois 108-73 on Saturday (Feb. 1) from the ARC Pool. They finish the regular season with a 6-3 overall, 0-3 B1G record.

“I am so grateful for this group of seniors,” said head coach Jeana Kempe. “They are incredible women, they’re leaders in and out the pool, and have raised the standard in the Illinois program. Their legacy goes beyond the pool!  It was a perfect day to celebrate them and head into the championship season!”

The 200 medley relay team of Suvana BaskarGwen BakkerAbby Ninan and Marin McAndrew started the meet off with a gold medal on a time of 1:43.84. Baskar later went on to win the 100 backstroke (56.01).

Sara Jass recorded the program’s second-fastest 100 IM (56.44) in her second-place finish and Kalina Nikolaeva swam the program’s sixth-fastest 100 IM (58.40) in her exhibition.

Adelaide Reaser won the 1000 freestyle on a season-best time of 10:09.14 and Paloma Canos Cervera took second place (10:16.72). Reaser also later won the 100 butterfly (56.42).

Sydney Stoll won the 100 IM on a pool record time (55.51), she later swam the program’s seventh-fastest 50 freestyle (23.08) leading off the 200 free relay and picked up the event crown in the 500 freestyle (4:53.52)

Sophia Yousuf took the event win in the 200 freestyle (1:50.71), Laurel Bludgen won the 100 freestyle (50.77) and Jane Umhofer won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.10).

The all senior 200 freestyle relay team of Stoll, Logan Kuehne, Umhofer and Molly Yetter finished off the meet the way it began, with a win (1:33.51).

The EIU women concluded their season with a dual at Illinois on Saturday, falling by a score of 73-108.

Anna Mueller took first-place in the 500 free (5:39.77) while Syndey VanderVelde came out on top in the 100 breast (1:12.60).

The Panthers also won the 200 free relay with Autumn GrinterIzzy GlasgowKaylan Ottosen, and Corinne Staneart combining for a time of 1:40.52.

Next up for the Panthers is the Summit League Championships in Iowa City. The event is set to get underway on Wednesday, February 19th at Campus Recreation and Welness Center.
