One of Forbes Magazines “Top Women Wealth Advisors” for 2020 is a former swimmer at Duke University.
Teri Conklin was named to Forbes’ annual list in April that is assembled based on an algorithm of qualitative and quantitative criteria, including:
- In-person interviews
- Industry experience
- Compliance records
- Revenue produced
- Assets under management
The 1000 women on the list in 2020 manage nearly $920 billion in total client assets.
Conklin, who works for UBS Wealth Management in Northbrook, Illinois, was ranked #121 on the list. She has $672 million in assets under her management.
“I was working in an environment with many men and there weren’t a lot of me,” Conklin said. “I was a competitive swimmer and I realized that I was in a team sport, but as an individual, I set my own personal goals. I just applied the same principles.”
Conklin swam for Duke as Teri Changnon from 1979-1982, just as the NCAA began to support women’s athletics. Shortly after graduating, she began her career at UBS and has remained at the company ever since, having been there for 39 years.
She met her husband Jeff while both were swimming at Duke, and the couple’s two daughters, Catherine and Caroline, both also swam at Duke, and married Duke alumni. Teri’s brother was also a Duke swimmer, as was her brother’s wife, and two children.
One could say that Duke is in the family lineage.
“I consider Duke part of our family, too.” Conklin continued. “Our friends, our children’s friends… It’s amazing.”
Conklin and her husband Jeff endow an annual scholarship, the Conklin Family Scholarship, for a women’s swimmer at Duke.
“Dan Colella has done an unbelievable job of making us part of the program as alumni,” Conklin said. “He’s done an awesome job. Because of our love of Duke and our love of the swim program, Jeff and I have endowed a scholarship for a woman swimmer.”
In her wealth management work, Conklin manages account with a minimum of $1 million, with a typical household account running between $3 million and $5 million.
