We’re a bit late on this one, but it’s due recognition none-the-less: two weeks ago, at the Los Angeles Invitational in Irvine, California, the JCC Waves broke the National Age Group Record in the women’s 17-18 200 meter free relay.
The foursome of Emma Henderson, Cheyenne Low, Breanna Tran, and Lindsey Engel combined for a 1:47.16, ratified by USA Swimming this week, to take down the old record of 1:47.57. That record was set by the Florida Atlantic Swim Team that was made up of Leane Darling, Amanda Slaight, Natalie Pike, and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Rhi Jeffrey. This record was set in 2004 – the rare relay record to last more than a few years these days.
The splits:
Henderson (17) – 27.83
Low (17) – 26.30
Tran (17) – 27.46
Engel (17) – 25.56
Henderson is committed to swim at Cal Poly next year, Low is going to Texas, while Tran and Engel are both going into their senior seasons (Engel has already committed to Stanford).
The head coach of the JCC Waves is Chris Duncan.
Note that since that swim, the Scottsdale Aquatic Club, with a lineup of all 15-and-16 year olds, broke the 15-18 record with a 1:44.53.
Scottsdale girls in greater Phoenix area did better, Phoenix/Maricopia 3.7 million versus about 3.0 million for Orange County, larger population of kids in Maricopia.
Not quite sure what you’re trying to prove with this comment.
But the Phoenix area girls in Scottsdale did better.
Perhaps, but as of right now these girls also have a hard earned, well deserved NAG. Why not let them enjoy their moment?
Looks like Henderson and Tran got carried to the record by Low and Engel
Ridiculous comment. A relay is a team effort. Looks to me like Henderson lead off in a season best flat start in a time she has only beaten a couple of times. Low swam a good split .1 under her best flat start time. Tran was slightly better at .2 under her best time and then Engel, one of the top recruits in the country, brought it home in a great split more tha a half of a second under her best flat start time. The same way you get any relay record ALL of your kids have to do the job on that day.
