CHARLESTON, Ill. – The University of Evansville swimming and diving team swept a double dual meet with Eastern Illinois and Wabash College on Saturday, as the Purple Aces’ swimmers won 20 of 22 total events on the afternoon at EIU’s Padovan Pool in Charleston, Illinois.
The UE men swept the Panthers and Little Giants by scores of 157-41 and 163-42, while the UE women knocked off EIU, 114-81. UE junior swimmer Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) helped lead the charge by dominating the field in his three events on Saturday, including setting a Padovan Pool record in the men’s 200-Yard IM event.
Santos Lopez teamed with juniors Patrik Vilbergsson (Kopavogur, Iceland) and Benjamin Hasanovic (Innsbruck, Austria) and sophomore Daniil Goncharuk (Kyiv, Ukraine) to post an impressive victory in the men’s opening event of the day – the 200-Yard Medley Relay – as the UE quartet won by over two full seconds. Santos Lopez then pulled off an impressive double-victory in consecutive events, breaking the Padovan Pool record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.83 to win by over five full seconds, before coming back just minutes later to win the men’s 100-Yard Butterfly by over two and a half seconds with a winning time of 50.97.
On the men’s side, Evansville won all 11 events against EIU and Wabash. Along with Santos Lopez, senior Jackson Caudill (Mt. Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County) posted multiple victories on the day, winning both the 1,000-Yard Freestyle (9:47.07) and the 500-Yard Freestyle (4:46.22). Vilbergsson cruised to a victory in the 100-Yard Backstroke (51.72). Meanwhile, Goncharuk won the 50-Yard Freestyle (21.43), while Hasanovic was victorious in the 100-Yard Freestyle (47.80). Freshman Joseph Capo (Luling, La./Jesuit) also placed first in the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:44.71), while junior Carlos Souto (A Coruna, Spain) won the 100-Yard Breaststroke.
On the women’s side, the Purple Aces won nine of the 11 events. Freshman Luana Carrotta (Ercolano, Italy) posted a pair of victories for UE, winning both the 200-Yard Freestyle (2:02.25) and the 500-Yard Freestyle (5:24.73). Fellow freshman Hannah Krings (Madison, Ala./Westminster Christian Academy) took home the title in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle (11:17.82), while freshman Rebecca Lago (Tezze sul Brenta, Italy) and sophomore Mia Pesavento (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) placed first and second in the 100-Yard Freestyle with times of 54.58 and 56.12, respectively.
Junior Sveva Brugnoli (Rome, Italy) placed first in the 200-Yard IM with a time of 2:12.50, before placing second behind freshman Evelyn Chin (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) just minutes later in the 100-Yard Butterfly, as Chin came in at 58.91 and Brugnoli finished with a time of 59.13. Freshman Ane Madina Garate (Onati, Spain) also captured the title in the 100-Yard Backstroke (1:00.25), while junior Mari Mueller (Zurich, Switzerland) edged teammate Rafaela Makariewicz (Porto Alegre, Brazil) by 0.3 seconds to win the 100-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.41.
Evansville will have a short week of practice this week before returning to action again on Friday, as UE will travel north to Chicago, Illinois for two days of competition. Evansville will face UIC and Missouri State in a double-dual meet on Friday, before taking part in the UIC Invitational next Saturday.

The Wabash College swimming and diving team spent the weekend competing against NCAA Division I programs from Indiana and Illinois, coming up with one victory in three dual meets. The Little Giants lost 203-89 to IUPUI on Friday night before splitting a double-dual at Eastern Illinois Saturday. Wabash defeated EIU 143-94 and lost to the University of Evansville 163-42.
Nicholas Plumb raced to second place in the 1,000-yard freestyle at Saturday’s double-dual against EIU and Evansville. Plumb finished the race in 10:18.19. Williams Renie added a third-place finish with a time of 10:32.37. Quinn Sweeney earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly Saturday by completing the race in 53.32. Ethan Johns picked up a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.96. Xander Straw swam to third place in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:03.75.
The Little Giants competed against the NCAA DI program from IUPUI at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis. Sweeney placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.90. Plumb picked up a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.31. Plumb scored first-place points in the 400-yard individual medley by finishing in 4:18.16. Dane Market took second place with a time of 4:29.42. Morgan Govekar scored a third-place finish with a time of 4:47.02.
Eddie DaMata, Justice Wenz, and Market scored first-, second-, and third-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke. DaMata completed the race in 1:00.44, while Wenz touched the wall in 1:02.35. Market turned in a time of 1:02.53.
Johns, Sweeney, John Allen, and Daniel Streeter picked up first-place points in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a combined time of 1:27.51.
Wabash is now gearing up for the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Championships scheduled for February 14-17 at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s swim teams wrapped up their weekend home stand on Saturday afternoon, as the Panthers competed against Evansville and Wabash at Padovan Pool. The meet also doubled as a Senior Day celebration, with eight Panthers being recognized for their contributions to the program.
In the first event of the afternoon, the women’s 200 medley relay team of Olivia Viele, Corinne Staneart, Kaylan Ottosen, and Autumn Grinter recorded a time of 1:50.48 to capture first place.
Grinter also won the women’s 50 freestyle with a time of 24.57.
Phoebe Croston earned a silver in the 200 freestyle (2:03.95) and Corinne Staneart finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:12.62).
Olivia Viele was runner up in the 100 backstroke (1:04.17), while Erika Baber clocked a time of 5:27.31 in the 500 freestyle for a second place finish.
Grinter, Croston, Izzy Glasgow, and Ottosen combined for a time of 1:41.11 in the women’s 200 freestyle relay, which secured another silver for the Panthers.
The women’s dual score was 114-81 in favor of Evansville.
The men’s team opened the day with second place finish in the 200 medley relay, with the team of Eli Westbrook, Gabe Berry, Sebastian Rosales, and Dismas Dillon recording a time of 1:37.10.
Later on, Conner Colston earned a silver in the 200 freestyle (1:44.98) and Dismas Dillon finished runner up in the 50 freestyle (21.55).
Sebastian Rosales also earned a top three finish with a time of 54.04 in the 100 butterfly.
The meet wrapped up with the men’s 200 freestyle relay, as Dillon, Berry, Colston, and Jacob Wienants earned another silver with a time of 1:26.79.
The men fell to Evansville 41-157 and were edged out by Wabash 94-111.
The next event on the Panthers’ schedule is the Butler Invite in Indianapolis. The meet is scheduled for Sunday, January 28th at 11 a.m.
