Melanie Patterson, a senior at Metea Valley High School in Aurora, Illinois, has announced her verbal commitment to join the Lewis University swim team in the fall of 2020. Patterson also swims for the Maverick Swim Club.
I chose Lewis University because it offered everything that I needed,both academically and athletically. The team and Coach Karns were very welcoming to me during my visit, and it just felt like a place that I wanted to be at. I am so, so excited to continue my swimming career at Lewis. Go Flyers!!
Patterson has had a strong year as she has lowered her personal best times in the 50/100/200 free, 100 back, and 50/200 breast in 2020 alone. Primarily swimming breaststroke, she competed at the Illinois Swimming Senior Championships earlier this month where she was a finalist in the 100 breast, finishing 20th in a time of 1:08.22. At the same meet she lowered her best time in the 200 breast, touching in 2:29.49.
Patterson will join the Lewis Flyers this fall.

Patterson will join a Flyers team that finished 8th at the 2020 GLVC Swimming and Diving Championships. With her best times she would have finished in the B-final of the 100 breast as well as the C-final of the 200 breast. Lewis was led by Erin Bachmeier, a freshman, in both breaststroke events. Patterson will have three years of overlap with her after arriving on campus this fall.
Patterson will also have one year of overlap with Stephanie Palczynski, Lewis’ lone female qualifier for the DII NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Palczynski qualified in both the 100 and 200 back.
