Boglarka Kapas Blasts New Hungarian Record in 1500m Free

Among the several national records that fell during day three’s finals, Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas snapped her own 1500m mark during tonight’s session.   Clocking a new record time of 15:47.09, Kapas crushed her old record of 16:02.58, held since 2013.  Kapas holds the women’s 800m freestyle Hungarian national record as well to claim two of eight national records not held by teammate Katinka Hosszu.

In the prelims of the 1500m at this meet, Kapas registered a mark of 16:06.25 to rank as the 6th seed headed into the final.  However, she certainly took things up a notch to nab bronze, taking almost a full 15 seconds off her previous personal best.  Strategically, Kapas patiently waited to make her move, maintaining 6th place through the 550m mark, then slowly moving up the ranks to 5th at the 700m mark, 4th at the 1200m until she ultimately took over Denmark’s Lotte Friis during the last stretch of the race.  Kapas’ final 50 split of 30.11 was enough to beat Friis to the bronze by just under two seconds.

Kapas took bronze in the race tonight behind gold medal winner Katie Ledecky, who set an incredible new world record of 15:25.48 for the win.  Second place went to New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle, who set a record of her own, a new Oceanic mark of 15:40.14.

End of 2013 she had a bad illness, i think something with her eye. She could not do all the work in 2014. So a time between the two is missing from 2014. She seems like back on course to an even better form in Rio. Congrats Bogi!
