Nic Fink Breaks National High School Record

  3 Braden Keith | February 24th, 2010

Nic Fink, a junior at the Pingry School in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, broke the national Independent Schools Short-Course-Meters record in the 100 breaststroke. His time of 1:03.37 converts to a 57.31 in short-course-yards, according to official USA-Swimming conversions, which is what most high school meets are swum in.

He swam the time in the New Jersey non-public school State semifinals (the meets are swum in a dual meet, bracket format) which his team won 121-48 over Bishop Eustace High School.

The previous record was held by Pat Fowler of Seattle Prep at 1:03.64 in 1998. Meters records typically stand for a long time, and are often slower than yards times, as there are not many high school meets swum in meters, although more pools are being built in meters, so this could change. Fowler still holds the National Independent Schools Record at a very speedy 53.66.

For comparison, the public school yards record is held by Brendan Hansen at 53.67, and the Public School record in meters is held by Glenn Moses at 1:03.35

Fink’s best time this season in yards, which is also the top time in the state, is 56.55, which he swam on February 5th at the Skyland Conference Championships.

Being only a junior, Fink will have plenty of chances next season to lower his record, and perhaps take a run at Fowler’s yards record.

You guys need to print a retraction on this article. Patrick Fowler’s time was 53.something.
That’s 10 seconds faster than this pipsqueak.
