LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty swimming & diving team earned a 205.5-147.5 win over the visiting Tulane Green Wave in a two-day meet which wrapped up on Saturday at Liberty Natatorium.

Notable

  • For the meet, Liberty won seven out of 13 individual swimming events and all four relays. Tulane claimed six individual swimming races, while the two teams took one diving event each.
  • The Lady Flames won the first event of the morning, the 400 freestyle relay, in 3:27.05, defeating the Green Wave by 2.82 seconds.
  • Liberty freshman Aly Bozzuto won the 50 free in 23.66. She has won all of her individual events and every relay she has been in so far.
  • Eden Troxell remained unbeaten in individual events so far this season, winning the 1000 freestyle in 10:18.87. Isabelle Gomez followed in 10:21.14, giving Liberty a 1-2 showing.
  • Liberty’s Kamryn Cannings claimed the 100 fly in 54.09, 2.86 seconds clear of second-place Varvara Gkiouzepa of Tulane.
  • Maddie Freece gave Liberty its first diving victory of the season, winning one-meter springboard with a score of 239.70.
  • This weekend’s meet has special significance to the program, as the Lady Flames were funds and awareness for cancer research. Over the past year, both Liberty Associate Head Coach Jessica Barnes and junior Grace Shaw were diagnosed with cancer. Both underwent treatment and are cancer free. Liberty Swimming & Diving also honored the memory of Cindy Baker, mother of former Lady Flame Hannah (Baker) Skirrow. Cindy Baker passed away due to cancer.

Historically Speaking

  • Liberty is 2-0 all-time against Tulane. The Lady Flames also defeated the Green Wave 131-93 at a meet hosted by FGCU, Jan. 4, 2020.

LYNCHBURG – The Tulane swimming & diving team won four events and had 14 top-three finishes in the team’s 205.5-147.5 loss to Liberty on Saturday, Oct. 19, on the second day of the dual meet. In the two-day meet, the Green Wave totaled seven event wins, 26 top-three finishes, 21 season bests, seven lifetime bests and six NIC Cuts or Open Water Qualifiers.

“Overall a great weekend of competing for both swimmers and divers,” head coach Amanda Caldwell explained. “Our divers added new dives to their list this weekend and the freshmen improved much from the weekend before. Liberty is known for having a strong diving squad and our Krewe did a great job on the boards. Our swimmers took on a challenge of competing in 3-4 events in the span of an hour. They did a great job rising up to the challenge with several hitting college and even lifetime best performances. A great weekend of competing coming off of midterms and I’m looking forward to getting back to work Monday to prepare for our next duals in Houston, Texas at the beginning of November.”

Gwen Shahboz won a pair of events with victories in the 200 breast (2:19.34) and the 200 IM (2:06.34).

Rafaela Sumida earned the 200 free victory (1:51.81).

Andrea Zeebe was the winner in the 100 back (55.62) and finished third in the 200 free (1:52.29).

The 4×100 free relay team of Olcaytu HatipogluCatherine RussoMaya Wilson and Lise Coetzee placed second in their event (3:29.87).

Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou earned second in the 100 fly (56.95).

Paige McKenzie took second in the 1-meter dive (229.28 pts.).

Wilson earned third in the 50 free (23.93).

The 4×50 medley relay team of Zeebe, Paula Gaya Bisquerra, Russo and Wilson were the runner-up in their event (1:45.49).

Hatipoglu tied for third in the 100 fly (58.71).

Rachel Casebolt earned third in the 1-meter dive (227.78 pts.)

Russo finished third in the 50 free (24.01).

Coetzee placed third in the 1000 free (10:22.19)

Next, Tulane travels to Houston to take on Rice on Nov. 1 in a dual meet. The program will also take on Houston and LSU on Nov. 2 in a head-to-head dual meet at UH.
