In an effort to drum up support and ticket sales for the 2013 Duel in the Pool, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, British Swimming has snuck out the first name for either squad in the Europe versus United States head-to-head all-star meet (details here).
Breaststroker Michael Jamieson, a bit of a hero in his native Glasgow, will be one of the headliners in the European squad, and should score big points as well. He was the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 200 breaststroke, and with the Americans lacking a true international-level breaststroke star (and Kevin Cordes, the closest we have to that, likely passing on this meet because of NCAA conflicts), Jamieson and/or another European swimmer will be heavy favorites to sweep the breaststroke events at the Commonwealth pool.
“I watched Duel in the Pool four years ago when it was in Manchester and it looked like a great event so I’m thrilled to be part of the team this time around,” said Jamieson.
“For me it will be special as it’s being held in my home town of Glasgow and it will be a great opportunity to try the newly refurbished pool ahead of the Commonwealth Games next year.”
“There’s no doubt it will be a very tough event as the USA are the strongest nation in world swimming but with an impressive European team and with the backing of a passionate home crowd behind us we hope to push them all the way.”
With his inclusion, local ticket demand should skyrocket. Depending on demand, British Swimming may have to resort to a lottery system, but for now, those interested in being notified of ticket releases can register here.
