The men’s 200m breaststroke brought the fire, as the top 2 finishers each smashed their nation’s standards en route to landing on the podium.
Topping the men’s 200m breast at these European Short Course Championships was 24-year-old Arno Kamminga, the man who has been electric over the course of the FINA World Cup Series. After establishing himself as the top-seeded swimmer of the morning with a new Dutch national record of 2:02.41, Kamminga took things up a notch en route to gold.
Splitting 59.37/1:02.99, Kamminga dropped another .05 from his already monumental morning swim to check-in with 2:02.36 and come away with the Championships title. His time cleared the 2:02.46 he registered 2 years ago in Copenhagen where he finished 4th. As such, the man upgraded himself from off the podium in 2017 to being the gold medalist here.
Right behind him this evening was Erik Persson of Sweden, who also did major damage with a new national mark. The 25-year-old Swede entered tonight’s final with a new personal best of 2:03.36, claiming the 3rd seed from the heats.
Flash forward to tonight, and the long course European Championships silver medalist got under the 2:03 mark for the first time ever, reaping silver in 2:02.80. Splits for Persson include 59.64/1:03.15 to obliterate the 2:03.86 he produced for 5th in Copenhagen.
