For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims at the NCAA National Championships, swimmers and divers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, and places 9 through 16, the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time, or score the most diving points, of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, “Down” to swimmers in the B final.
Day 2 Up/Downs
Diving prelims have not concluded yet, so they are excluded here. Stanford put a swimmer in every final, the only team to do so. They also have the most B finalists with 3.

Day 2 Points
Scoring out the prelims as seeded tonight gives Stanford an advantage. They are seeded with 163.5 points tonight before diving, putting them well ahead of second place Cal who have 104.5 seeded going into tonight. With yesterday accounted for, this would extend Stanford’s advantage to 204-136.5. The biggest gainer vs the psych sheet this morning was NC State who picked up 15.5 points. Cal dropped the most, “losing” 27 points. There will be plenty of opportunities for that to even out tonight with 2 finals relays and 5 individual swims.

Add 30 points for Texas, 2 big finals in diving.
Cal has some huge potential time drop swapping 2 swimmers for 400 MR final.
If they swap out the back and free legs I estimate they could drop around 4 seconds. Hope to see some fireworks tonight.
