Koa Stotz Puts Up Aussie Age Record In 14-Yr-Old Boys’ 50 Breaststroke

Day 2 of able-bodied racing at the 2025 Australian Age Championships brought about another record to keep the momentum going from last night.

Racing in the final of the boys’ 50m breaststroke for 14-year-olds, Somerset Swim Club’s Koa Stotz ripped a new lifetime best of 29.52 to register a new Australian Age Record.

The former age benchmark stood at the 29.76 Hudson Hegarty of Knox Pymble put on the books last December, while Stotz’s previous PB rested at the 30.41 he notched at that same competition. Stotz’s performance, therefore, represents the teen’s first-ever foray under the 30-second barrier.

Teammate Cohen Tarrant was just under half a second behind in 30.01 and Reef McMeeking collected bronze a hair after that in 30.04.

On his head-turning swim, Stotz commented to Swimming Australia, “That was incredible … I just can’t believe it. This is my first Age Nationals … I hit two metres last week (~6 ft, 5 inch), now I just have to start filling out … and I am just so excited about the 50 free in a couple of days.”

Last night Chandler swimmer Lincoln Wearing took down Olympic champion Mack Horton‘s Australian Age and All Comers Record en route to winning the boys’ 800m free for 15-year-olds (8:03.73).

This evening, the Tsuyoshi Kimura-trained Wearing tried the 200m backstroke on for size, grabbing gold in a strong showing of 2:04.72.

That beat the field by nearly 2 seconds, with Carlile’s Luke Lee earning runner-up status in 2:06.40 followed by Christopher Montana who touched in 2:07.19. As a refresher, Montana broke the Aussie and All Comers Age Record in last night’s 100m breaststroke.

Wearing split 28.98/32.06 (1:01.04)/32.34/31.34 en route to establishing a near-personal best. His career-quickest result remains at the 2:04.38 produced last December.

Fresh off her Aussie Age Record in last night’s 100m breast for 16-year-old girls, Albury Amateur’s Sienna Toohey topped the age group’s 200m IM race on day 2.

Toohey stopped the clock at 2:16.28 to eke out the win over Manly’s Lilly McPherson who settled for silver in 2:16.85. Lucy Porter also landed on the podium in 2:18.41 as the bronze medalist.

As a testament to Toohey’s breaststroking dominance, the teen’s breaststroke leg of 37.31 actually beat her backstroke split of 37.87. For comparison, runner-up McPherson posted a 35.69 backstroke split to her 40.33 breaststroke leg.

Additional Notes

• The 17-year-old boys’ 200m IM saw Grayson Doig of Trinity Grammar hit a mark of 2:04.71 to get the job done for gold. That crushed his previous PB of 2:05.55 from last year’s edition of this competition. This outing represented the teen’s 4th consecutive year of owning the event for his age group.
• Somerville House athlete Olivia Hine reaped gold in the girls’ 17-year-old 50m butterfly, producing a mark of 26.56. That was just .22 off Olivia Wunsh‘s age record of 26.34 from last year.
• Lukas Dunn of Knox Pymble won the boys’ 100m freestyle for 15-year-olds, notching a gold medal-worthy time of 51.17. That easily overtook his previous personal best of 51.70 from just last month.
• Jack Morrow won the boys’ 17-year-old 50m backstroke event. The St. Andrew’s ace logged 25.54, his first time under the 26-second barrier.
