Freshman Jack Smith Sweeps Sprints at Iowa Intrasquad

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The black team won 10 events to post a 94-79 victory over the gold team in the University of Iowa swimming and diving team’s intrasquad meet Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.

“This meet was a lot of fun,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “You could tell we have a hungry bunch of student-athletes.  This was a fun meet to break up training to get ready for next week.  The student-athletes were competing all night.”

The black team opened the meet with a win in the women’s 200-medley relay with the quartet of sophomore Carly O’Brien, junior Emma Sougstad, and seniors Allie Orvis and Olivia Kabacinski touching in 1:43.50.

In the men’s 200-medley relay, freshmen Kenneth Mende, sophomore Jerzy Twarowski, junior Jackson Halsmer, and senior Mike Nelson posted a win for the gold team with a time of 1:31.05 to tie the team score at seven.

Mende also took home the individual title in the 100 back, touching in 49.28.

One of the highlights of the meet came in the diver’s 50 free when freshman Will Brenner touched with a time of 20.87 for the win. He finished .08 behind fellow freshman Jack Smith, who won the main 50 free in 20.79 seconds.

Smith also was victorious in the 100 free, touching in 45.34 seconds.

The black squad led, 86-79, going into the final event when the relay consisting of Brenner, junior Brandon Farnum, and seniors Jackson Allen and David Ernstsson swam a time of 1:22.48 to win the 200-free relay and secure the black team victory.

Kabacinski and Sougstad also won individual events in the 100 free and 100 breast. Kabacinski posted a time of 51.01 seconds to win the free, while Sougstad swam a 1:03.11 to touch first in the 100 breast.

The Hawkeyes are back in action on Oct. 1516, hosting Michigan State and Northern Iowa (women).
