Hanson Takes Down Nearly 3-Decades Old Swedish 200 Free Record

Most of the men in tonight’s 200m free semi-finals keep their cards close to their vests, with just one athlete, Russia’s Martin Malyutin, dipping under the 1:46 threshold.

Behind Malyutin’s 1:45.60, a pair of Brits scored 1:46.15 and 1:46.17 via Duncan Scott and Tom Dean, with Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys and Switzerland’s Antonio Djakovic right there in 1:46.19 and 1:46.26, respectively.

Keeping pace as the 6th seed was Robin Hanson, with the Swede firing off a time of 1:46.50 to check-in not only with a new lifetime best but also a new national record.

Entering this meet, Hanson’s personal best in this event rested at the 1:46.93 he notched at the 2019 European Junior Championships, a time which rendered him as the gold medalist there in Kazan.

Tonight, however, splitting 51.76/54.74, Hanson dipped into new territory, slicing .43 off of his previous PB to take over Anders Holmertz’s NR of 1:46.76 that’s been on the books since 1992.

Hanson has committed to swim for the University of California class of 2025.

Of note, Spain’s Cesar Castro fired off a new national record of 1:47.13 this morning in the heats before adding slightly to settle for 1:47.18 and 12th place.
