Minnesota Gophers promote coaches Ryan Purdy, Terry Ganley

The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers have updated official job titles on two of their swimming coaches, Ryan Purdy and Terry Ganley.

Purdy has been with the Golden Gopher Swimming and Diving program since 2011, and has been promoted from “assistant coach” to “senior assistant coach” this spring.

That comes after Minnesota has hired two new coaches to its staff in the past year: South African Olympian Gideon Louw last summer and former CSUB coach Tyler Gerst two weeks ago.

Purdy works primarily with the middle distance swimmers at Minnesota, and has been a part of the Gopher women’s four straight Big Ten titles, stretching back to 2012.

The Gophers have also expanded the official title of longtime head coach Terry Ganley, extending her official role from “Head Women’s coach” to “Senior Associate Head Coach – Women’s and Men’s.”

Ganley was a co-head coach of the women’s program alongside Kelly Kremer until Minnesota combined its men’s and women’s programs in 2011. Ganley retained the head coaching title with the women when Kremer was promoted to head coach of both programs. Now Ganley follows suit, as her title expands to associate head coach with both genders.

Ganley primarily works with the sprinters at Minnesota, and has a storied history with the program. A former standout swimmer, Ganley was the first-ever female All-American in any sport at the University of Minnesota. She served as an assistant coach under the legendary Jean Freeman, and took over as head coach immediately after Freeman’s retirement.
