2026 European Aquatics Championships

31 Jul 2026 – 16 Aug 2026

SwimSwam bears good news for Portugal sports fans who might be having a tough day. The Iberian nation announced a roster of nine to represent them at the 2026 European Championships in Paris. The selection consists of three men and six women, meaning the nation will not participate in men’s relays.

One Portuguese medalist from the 2024 European Championships returns in Camila Rebelo. The 23-year-old is the defending 200 back champion after hitting a 2:08.95 national record at the meet in 2024. Last year, at the short course iteration of Euros, she missed out on the podium in the same event by just one spot. In a relatively weak 200 back field on the continent, Rebelo should be a medal threat if she approaches her pr. The only sub-2:09 this season among Europeans is Frenchwoman Bertille Cousson at 2:08.67.

Headlining the men’s roster is 21-year-old Diogo Ribeiro. The sprinter has a track record of showing up when it counts. His resume includes three LC Worlds medals (two of them gold) and a double European Junior title outing last year in the 50 fly and 50 free. At the senior European Championships, he also boasts one bronze medal in the 50 fly from 2022 when he was a teenager. He’ll aim to add to his haul in Paris and get more experience racing the likes of David Popovici, Maxime Grousset, and Noe Ponti in his premiere events.

The 2024 European 400 free bronze medalist and Portugal’s go-to middle distance freestyler Francisca Martins is also present on the roster, as is sprint and breaststroke ace Ana Rodrigues.

Also be on the lookout for newly-minted national record holder Ema Conceição. Last week, she busted out a 54.28 short course 100 free to establish a new Portuguese best.
