Ghana Swimming Stakeholders Call for Governance and Constitutional Elections

The woes surrounding Ghana Swimming continue, as stakeholders have called for governance structures and constitutional elections within the nation’s swimming association amid ongoing turmoil over leadership and electoral processes.

This comes about five months after the National Sports Authority withdrew its recognition of the Ghana Swimming Association, and just three months after Ghana withdrew as hosts of the 2026 African Swimming Championships due to the ongoing governance issues.

In a report by Joy Online, stakeholders discussed how governance challenges are negatively affecting both the athletes within the federation and the federation’s international standing. Stakeholders discussed how major governing bodies, such as World Aquatics and the Commonwealth Games Federation, recognize “only federations that are transparent, accountable, and properly governed.”

Duke Aaron Sasu, the Lawyer and spokesperson for Swimming Stakeholders Connect, called for the establishment of an Interim Management Committee to assist in overseeing reforms within the association.

“We are calling for the establishment of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to address issues of accountability, integrity, and governance, and to conduct free and fair elections,” Sasu said in the report from Joy Online.

Ghanaian swimmer Abeiku Jackson spoke at the meeting, urging stakeholders to resolve these internal issues, as he and fellow national athletes are missing out on several opportunities to compete abroad.

The group in attendance also highlighted that any elections conducted outside the set constitutional regulations could negatively affect the federations and the athletes within them.

Additionally, Swimming Stakeholder Connect called on the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to enforce an agreement on a five-person committee for a free and fair election. As reported by Joy Online, the group believes that enforcing an agreed roadmap is “essential to restoring transparency, credibility, and stability within Ghana Swimming.”
