Zettle Wins Again on Final Night of Austin Futures

2016 FUTURES CHAMPIONSHIPS – AUSTIN

Alexander Zettle, who won the 400 free last night and notched a U.S. Open cut in the process, posted an 8:17.62 to win the 800 free tonight.

Zettle won by over ten seconds, a huge victory for the 16-year-old from Lakeside. Zettle’s teammate Samantha Porter swam a quick 57.04 to win the women’s 100 free, nearly venturing into 56-second territory. For the men, 16-year-old Shaine Casas took the men’s 100 free with a 51.51.

RACE’s Carolyn Johnston swam a 2:17.45, winning the 200 back by over a second on the women’s side. The men’s race went to Glen Cowand in 2:05.06, touching just hundredths ahead of Jack Dolan‘s 2:05.14.

Haley Benjamin won the women’s 1500 by almost ten full seconds, posting a 17:01.81. The 16-year-old from Durango Swim Club took several tenths off of her previous lifetime best.

Another Lakeside swimmer, Lauren Savoy, was the only female IM’er to crack 2:20 in the 200 IM. her tie of 2:19.87 was enough to edge ahead of 2nd place Annika Wagner, a 14-year-old from NASA who was 2:20.43. Lauren Pitzer was third in 2:20.63. Braden Vines scorched the field with a 2:05.78 to win the men’s 200 IM.

Relays closed out the meet– the men’s 400 medley relay went to Lakeside, which got a 51.44 anchor leg out of Zettle. Cypress Fairbanks took the women’s relay, with Victoria Roubique swimming a 1:11.91 leg to torch the rest of the breaststrokers in the field.
