YMCA National Champ Kate May Signs with Purdue

Purdue signed YMCA National Champion 200 flyer Katherine May this week.  She is a stand-out for Coach Christian Rhoten at Edwardsville (IL) High School, and has been a part of Coach Bob Rettle’s Edwardsville Breakers since age six.  The May family has the 200 fly in their blood as Kate’s younger brother is also a 200 fly specialist for the Breakers, and her older brother has taken the event to the next level already, as he is currently on the roster at Columbia University.

Kate has made the A-final at short-course Y Nats the last two years, placing as high as third, but her 2:16.65 at long course Y Nats was good enough for the crown.  Her versatility may prove to be a weapon for the Boilermakers on several fronts, but they have a sure thing with Kate’s best event.  Her top time for the 200 fly would have already scored in the B-final at the B1G meet last year.

Kate told SwimSwam she chose Purdue because “I love the team atmosphere. Immediately I felt so welcome! There is so much respect for everyone on the team and even on campus.” She also added, “would like to give a shout out to the rest of her fellow Purdue commits! Can’t wait to spend the next four years with you guys!”

Kate’s best times in yards:
200 fly 1:58.98
100 fly 54.61
200 IM 2:04.84
100 free 51.39
200 free 1:51.94
100 back 56.67
200 back 2:02.63
