The Yale men’s swimming and diving team defeated University of Connecticut (200.00 – 100.00) and Boston University (221.50 – 78.50) at a tri-meet hosted by UConn on Dec. 3. Yale commanded the pace throughout the meet with many strong performances, winning nine of the 16 total events.
The team had great success in the freestyle events, both short and long-distances alike. Junior Kei Hyogo and senior Ben Lerude continued to dominate the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events; Hyogo has taken first and Lerude, second in both events at every non-invitational meet so far this season. Following up the duo, freshman Christopher Miller took third in the 500-yard freestyle, completing the sweep.
Not to be outdone, junior Jonathan Rutter finished first in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:39.86. Rutter was most recently recognized Ivy League Swimmer-of-the-Week by CollegeSwimming.com and lived up to expectations, capturing first in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:03.20, over three seconds ahead of the field, as well as in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:52.03.
Rounding out the freestyle events, freshmen Max Bottene, Henry Gaissert and Ryan Huizing stepped up to make critical contributions to the team. In the 50-yard freestyle, Bottene took runner-up with Huizing just behind in third. Gaissert won a close battle in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing first at 46.30, just 0.02 ahead of his opponent. Bottene and Gaissert also swam on Yale’s winning 400-yard freestyle relay alongside Hyogo and sophomore Adrian Lin.
The Bulldogs also posted great performances in the breaststroke events. In the 100-yard breaststroke, junior Derek Kao placed first in 56.71 with team captain Alex Goss following closely in third. Kao also finished runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke behind Rutter.
In the 100-yard backstroke, senior Alex Schultz led the Yale pack at second with a time of 50.75. Sophomore Edward Stolarski finished third in the event and junior Shawn Nee finished fourth. Schultz also took third in the 200-yard backstroke.
Yale’s butterfliers had a solid meet and impressive finishes. Huizing and freshman Duncan Lee took first and second in the 100-yard butterfly at 50.58 and 50.80 respectively. Lee also finished third in the 200-yard butterfly, just behind sophomore Joey Carbone‘s runner-up finish in the event.
Freshman diver, Chris LaBella, continues to make improvements. LaBella finished runner-up in the three-meter diving event with a score of 275.25 and third in the one-meter diving event with a score of 236.70.
With these two wins under their belt, the Bulldogs will look to continue their success against Southern Connecticut University on Dec. 8.
