Yale and Princeton Positioned to Take Brown Invite Titles After Sunday’s Prelims

Yale and Princeton are well positioned after Sunday morning’s prelims to defend their leads going into the final session of the three-day Brown Invitational, which starts Sunday at 5 p.m. EST at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, R.I.

Live Results (includes prelim and final results, Friday through Sunday)

The Yale women (739.5) lead Princeton (584.5) and Brown (534), while the Princeton men (727) have a similar points lead over Brown (552) and Columbia (513). After the recap, full team standings are presented for the three-day invitational, which has Brown hosting Princeton University, Dartmouth College, Rider University, Columbia University, and Yale University (women only).

It’s a later Sunday prelim start for the 1650-yard free events, which are scheduled for 2:40 p.m. EST. Finals for these distance events will run during the evening’s session along with the morning prelim events, plus the 400-yard free relay.

Five Princeton Women Make 200-Yard Back Final, While Dartmouth Men Qualify One And Two

Yale’s Michelle Chintanaphol starts things off for the Bulldogs with the top qualifying time in the 200-yard back (1:59.08), but she’ll be up against five Princeton women in the A-Final, who will take up a lot of scoring points to help close the gap between the number one and two teams going into the final session. Shirley Wang (2:00.27) leads the Tiger contingent with the second fasted qualifying time. Heidi VanderWel (2:00.79) and Olivia Jameson (2:00.96), who qualified third and fourth, will help Chintanaphol and Yale limit the points Princeton aims to claim.

Dartmouth goes one and two in the men’s 200-yard back prelims with James Verhagen (1:46.47) and Aaron Athanas (1:47.97). Princeton’s Corey Okubo (1:48.11) and Connor Maher (1:49.94) qualified third and fifth but seemingly didn’t use their top gear, as both were five seconds off their season best times. Between Okubo and Maher was Columbia’s Kevin Quinn (1:49.25), who will be joined by his Lion’s teammate Michael Fox-Moles (1:50.09) in the A Final, which features two swimmers each from Dartmouth, Princeton, Columbia and Brown.

Brown And Princeton Represented Well in 100-Yard Finals

Brown’s Kate Dillione and Yale’s Kina Zhou, who have swam under 50 seconds this season, qualify one and two in the women’s 50-yard free with marks of 50.35 and 50.87. Next to Zhou, Dartmouth’s Charlotte Kamai, who qualified third, had the biggest add (0.67) to her season best, as she stopped the clock at 51.17. Zhou added 1.12 seconds to her seed time.

Brown and Princeton put three women each into the A Final to fight for what now stands as a tight contest for second in the team standings. Zhou will be the lone Bulldog in that final. She will have help from the Big Green’s Kamai to limit the points Princeton and Brown can take to close the overall points gap between them and the front-running Bulldogs.

It’s Princeton’s Harrison Wagner qualifying first in the men’s 100-yard free (45.25) with a 1.30 second add to his seed time. He is one of four Tigers in tonight’s A Final. Qualifying second is Brown’s Jack Nee (45.60). He will be the lone Bear in the final for the hosts to cheer for. David Jaki (45.63) and Kevin Frifeldt (45.65) qualify fourth and fifth for Columbia and Zachary Molloy (45.93) seventh for Rider to complete the top eight entries for tonight’s sprint contest.

Yale Women and Princeton Men Stack 200-Yard Breast Finals

The women’s 200-yard breast final will give Yale a chance to either pad and defend their lead or claw back some of the point spread they might lose in Sunday night’s earlier events, as they place four women into the A Final, starting with top qualifier Paulina Kaminski (2:16.47). She will be supported by Ali Stephens-Pickeral (2:18.95), Jacqui Levere (2:19.80) and Elizabeth Larsen (2:20.89), who qualified third, fourth and seventh.

Brown’s Katie Roach (2:18.48) and Hailey Jacobson (2:20.29) qualify second and fifth, giving the host crowd an opportunity to see some Bears get into the top three. Princeton’s Melissa Fulenwider (2:20.86) and Maddy Veith (2:24.28), who qualified sixth and eighth, will give the Tigers a shot at some high-scoring points.

Princeton’s Jack Pohlmann is the top qualifier in the men’s 200-yard breast (2:01.82) and leads Brett Usinger and Caleb Tuten to make a trio of Tigers for the A Final. They will be challenged by Dartmouth (Jay Schulte and Konrad Von Moltke), Brown (Connor Lohman), Rider (Zachary Mabin) and Columbia (Joseph Lozano).

Yale Women And Okubo Qualifiy Tops In 200-Yard Fly

Yale’s Isla Hutchinson-Maddox (1:59.45) and Sydney Hirschi (1:59.55) qualify one and two in the women’s 200-yard fly and are the only women to go under two minutes during prelims. Brown’s Gina Matsumoto (2:00.72) goes third before a run of four Tigers, which consists of two women (Morgan Karetnick and Beverly Nguyen) who have been under two minutes this season. Brown’s Caroline Vexler takes the last qualifying spot in tonight’s final with a 2:03.88 result, which is three and a half seconds slower than her best result this season.

Corey Okubo comes into the meet for Princeton with the fastest 200-yard fly seed (1:44.50) and qualifies fastest for Sunday’s night’s final with a 1:48.61 in the prelims. Okubo, who earlier qualified third for the 200-yard back final, will have teammate Marco Bove to keep him company in the final. Don’t expect Bove to just play wingman, though as he was more than four seconds slower than his 1:46.09 seed time with a 1:50.25 qualifying time.

The host Bears will have three men in the A final, led by Riley Springman who qualified third (1:49.14) but has gone faster this season. Columbia’s Kevin Quinn qualified fourth (1:49.83) and will contest for a top three spot.

Chambers Qualifies Tops In Women’s 3-Meter Dive

Princeton’s Caitlin Chambers dominated the women’s 3-meter prelims Sunday morning, as she put up a 228.20, which was more than twenty points ahead of second and third place qualifiers, Yale’s Lilybet MacRae (267.50) and Brown’s Rachel Speakman (261.10). The finals are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
