Wyatt Davis, Ella Welch Scratch C Finals at Winter Juniors – East

2019 SPEEDO WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – EAST

The only finals session scratches on day 2 of the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East were out of the C finals, where Ella Welch dropped the girls’ 200 IM and Wyatt Davis dropped the boys’ 50 free.

In prelims, Welch swam a lifetime best in the 200 IM in 2:02.24 – knocking over a second from her previous best time of 2:03.47. That qualified her 18th, and her scratch pulls up 16-year old Lily Burke from SwimAtlanta into the C final.

Welch also qualified for the A final of the 50 free on Thursday, swimming a 23.02. That race comes at the end of the session, after the 200 IM.

In the 50 free, Davis qualified 21st in the morning heats in a 20.73. That shaves a few tenths off his previous best, but he too has a more primary race to focus on in finals: the 200 IM. There, he’s the 3rd qualifier in 1:45.52 behind Carson Foster and Tim Connery.

His scratch from the 50 means that Michael Ivy and Evan Stanislaw don’t have to swim-off for a spot in the C final.

Also of note, Carson Foster wound up not swimming the 500 free in prelims, leaving an empty lane. Preston Forst, who had several high seeds, declared false starts in both the 200 IM and 50 free in prelims.

There are a few National Age Group Record watches for Thursday’s finals session. One is for 15-year old Claire Curzan of the TAC Titans. She easily qualified 1st in the 50 free in 22.26, though her best time is 21.89. She has been dealing with illness that kept her out of the U.S. Open, however. The 15-16 National Age Group Record of 21.82 belongs to Gretchen Walsh.
