The William & Mary Tribe men and women both defeated their former conference rivals, the Old Dominion Monarchs, at ODU’s pool on Saturday.

The W&M men won 11 of the 14 swimming events, including a trio of doubles by Ian Thompson (50/100 free), Ben Skopic (200 free, 200 IM) and Carter Kale (200 fly, 500 free).

It was a very similar story on the women’s side, with the point totals only one off from the men’s.  The Tribe again took 11 of the 14 swimming events after losing both diving events.  Leading the Tribe with two victories each were Morgan Smith (1000 free, 200 IM) and Katie Sell (100 back, 100 free).

With just over a month left in the season, the Tribe will be looking for their fourth-straight Colonial Athletic Association championship for their men’s team, and the third-straight for their women’s team.  The SwimSwam Swimulator rankings currently project both the Tribe men and women to win those conference championships, based on season-best times.

William & Mary Men’s Release

The William & Mary men’s swimming team tied the all-time record for most consecutive road wins with a 184-110 victory at Old Dominion on Saturday.  The win, W&M’s seventh in a row on the road, improved the Tribe to 9-1 overall, while the Monarchs fell to 1-4 on the season.

W&M started the meet down 32 points due to diving held earlier in the day, and though it took until the seventh event to take the lead, the Tribe’s momentum was as irresistible as the tides with 11 wins in the 14 swimming events.  That included a sweep of the two relays, starting with the 200 medley relay where Colin Demers (Virginia Beach, Va.) staked the Tribe to a wire-to-wire win in 1:32.18 alongside teammates Devin McNulty (Herndon, Va.), Jack Doherty (Middletown, Conn.), and Kyle Neri(Wallingford, Conn.).  On the other end of the meet, Neri led-off the 400 free relay before handing off to Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.), Eric Grimes (Louisville, Ky.), and Ian Thompson (Alexandria, Va.) who brought the win home in 3:03.87.

In between the two relays, six men won nine events.  Among the double-winners was Thompson, who took the 50 free by nearly a second in 20.69 and turned around immediately to win the 100 free in 45.69, finishing ahead of his teammate Neri in both events.  Fellow sophomore Ben Skopic(Marriottsville, Md.) showed his impressive range with a win in the 200 IM in 1:41.37 and later the 200 IM in 1:53.08, and junior Carter Kale (Williamsburg, Va.) kept his perfect streak alive in the 500 free with a 4:36.75 win.  Kale also won the 200 fly in 1:52.26.  The three single winners included Doherty, who won the 100 fly in 49.99 seconds, as well as Demers in the 100 back (51 seconds flat) and freshman Jake Kealy (Wilton, Conn.), winning the 200 back in 1:51.64.

W&M Women’s Release

The William & Mary women’s swimming team rolled on the road Saturday, downing Old Dominion 190-104 in the final road meet of the year.  The Tribe won its sixth-straight away from home, and improved to 10-2 overall while the Lady Monarchs fell to 0-6 on the season.

Down 32 points at the start of the meet due to diving, the Tribe made that up with wins in the first three swimming events and never looked back, winning 11 of 14 swimming events total on the day.  That included a 1-2 sweep of both relays, with Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.), Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.), Abby Mack (Wayne, Pa.), and Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.) combining for the win in the 200 medley relay at 1:45.94 to start the meet off.  At the other end of things, Herold led-off the 400 free relay in 52.84 seconds and Sell brought it home in 51.99, while freshmen Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) powered through the middle 200 and helped the team put up a total time of 3:30.98 for the win.

In the individual events, Sell won both of her races, out-touching ODU ace Jacklyn VandePoel in the 100 back in 57.63 seconds, and stopping the clock in 52.53 seconds to win the 100 free by nearly half a second.  Fellow junior Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) also won both of her races, winning the 1,000 free in 10:23.59 and the 200 IM in 2:08.25.

Bull and Crowley each won one race, the freshman taking the 200 free in 1:53.56 while the senior Crowley swam 56.94 seconds, a lifetime-best by 0.4 seconds, to win the 100 fly.  Senior Meghan Schilken (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up her first win of the year in the 50 free, out-touching her teammate Herold by .01.  Junior Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had an easy 2:06.66 win in the 200 fly, and the Tribe’s final victory came courtesy of sophomore Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.) in the 500 free, timing 5:08.44.
