Wisconsin Realigns Boys High School Sections; State Meet Hosts Still TBD

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) has realigned its section meet assignments for boys swimming, while the 2020 state meet hosts are still up in the air, pending construction on the new facility at the University of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin runs two classes of high school swimming: division 1 for the state’s biggest schools and division 2 for the smaller schools. There’s not a lot of shuffling between the two this time around. Division 1 will still run six sections and division 2 four sections, and only four schools swapped between the two classes. Milton and Pulaski will jump up from division 2 to the big-school class, while South Milwaukee and Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights will drop from division 1 down to division 2.

You can see the full section assignments here. Last year’s section results (and team lineups) are here.

The Middleton section remains loaded in division 1. It includes last year’s state champs (Madison West) and state runners-up (Middleton), as well as two more top-10 schools: Sun Prairie and Verona/Mount Horeb. None of those four change from last year’s assignments.

Waukesha South will move from the Greenfield section to host its own section meet. Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial was third at state last year in division 1. The new Waukesha South section will essentially take on most of the teams from last year’s Homestead section, including state fifth-placers Brookfield Central and seventh-placers Arrowhead. In addition, Beloit Memorial will now host its own section, headlined by state fourth-placers Franklin.

Division 2 had even less change among sections, with only hosts switching up. Baraboo will continue to host its section, including state champs Edgewood, runners-up Monona Grove and fellow top-10 teams Baraboo and McFarland. Wisconsin Rapids will now host a division 2 section despite Rapids itself competing in division 1. The section formerly hosted by Rhinelander will take place in Wisconsin Rapids, including state fourth-placers Rhinelander and seventh-placers Lakeland Union.

Meanwhile the former Ashwaubenon section will take place in Plymouth, including top-10 teams Kiel/Elkhart and Grafton. One section is still without a host. Last year, Whitefish Bay hosted, and the section includes state third-placers Elkhorn Area along with tenth-placers Whitefish Bay.
