Winter Juniors Qualifier Dereck Montgomery Commits to Oklahoma Christian

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Dereck Montgomery from Rosenberg, Texas has announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic careers at Division II Oklahoma Christian University.

The college environment was something I was looking for in a college. The swim team is great and having former Olympian Josh Davis as my head coach will be great”

Montgomery competes for the Houston Bridge Bats out of Houston, TX. Montgomery has only been swimming year round since the 2019 competition year and has made large improvements since. In 2019 he began during the summer long course season where he notched season bests of 25.64 in the 50 freestyle, 56.72 in the 100 freestyle, and 2:17.75 in the 200 freestyle. Since then, he has dropped those long course times to 24.19 in the 50, 52.76 in the 100, and 1:58.26 in the 200 freestyles. Both of those 50 and 100 freestyle long course times are winter junior cuts which he attained at the Speedo Sectionals in Austin, TX.

Montgomery just graduated this year from B. F. Terry High School located in Rosenberg, Texas. His best short course times are:

  • 50 freestyle: 21.00
  • 100 freestyle: 46.17
  • 200 freestyle: 1:43.14
  • 100 backstroke: 51.97
  • 100 butterfly: 51.67

Oklahoma Christian University is a private university located in Edmond, Oklahoma. On June 1, 2016, the school announced that it would add men’s and women’s swimming programs. 5-time Olympic medalist Josh Davis was named the first head coach for both programs. The teams began competition during the 2017-2018 season and are members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

At the 2021 conference championships, OCU finished 5th on the men’s side with a total of 234 points. They were not far behind fourth place Adams State who scored 263 points. Montgomery will make an immediate impact at the conference level for OCU. At this year’s conference meet, he would have placed 8th in the 50 freestyle, 10th in the 200 freestyle, 11th in the 100 backstroke, and 6th in the 100 freestyle.

Montgomery joins Riley Taylor, Caleb Musser, Jacob Rivera, Nathaniel Whitehead, and JT Amrein in the class of 2025 suiting up for OCU this fall.
